Curbside Organics

The City of Fernie’s decision to expand its garbage and recycling program to include curbside organics is a forward-thinking move that deserves applause. Starting August 19th, residents will receive new organics carts and kitchen catcher bins, with weekly pickup of organic waste kicking off on September 23rd. This is more than just a change in how we handle our waste—it’s a significant step towards a more sustainable future for our community.

We live in a time where the environmental challenges we face demand urgent and meaningful action. Fernie, like many small communities, has a responsibility to do its part in mitigating the effects of climate change and protecting our natural surroundings. By embracing the curbside organics program, we are doing just that.

One of the most immediate benefits of this initiative is the extension of our landfill’s life. Landfills are not infinite; they are costly, environmentally harmful, and eventually, they fill up. By diverting organic waste away from landfills, we are not only saving space but also saving money—money that can be better spent on community projects and services rather than on finding and developing new landfill sites.

But the benefits extend far beyond just waste management. Organic waste in landfills decomposes anaerobically, producing methane—a greenhouse gas that is far more potent than carbon dioxide. By composting our organic waste instead, we significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions Fernie contributes to the atmosphere. In a world grappling with the devastating effects of climate change, this reduction is not just a benefit; it’s a moral imperative.

Moreover, the compost produced from our organic waste can be a valuable resource. Enriched soils mean healthier gardens, more robust parks, and even better local agriculture. This is a win for everyone—from the backyard gardener to the farmer, and ultimately, to every resident who values fresh, local produce.

The rollout of the organics program also comes with a unique opportunity to engage and educate our community. The bins and the new routine will be a daily reminder of the role each of us plays in protecting the environment. It’s a chance to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in our children and to reinforce the values of sustainability and responsibility.

Of course, change can be challenging. There will be a learning curve as residents adjust to separating their waste differently, and the city will need to ensure that the new system is user-friendly and efficient. But the potential benefits far outweigh the temporary inconveniences.

This program is not just about managing waste—it’s about cultivating a mindset that prioritizes the health of our planet. It’s about recognizing that the small actions we take at home, like composting our food scraps, can have a significant impact on the global stage.

As the organics carts start arriving at our doorsteps, let’s embrace this change with the enthusiasm and commitment it deserves. With the cart delivery, you will receive a guidebook with important information on the new program, including the new collection calendar and a list of what is accepted in the new bins.

By participating fully in this program, we are not just extending the life of our landfill; we are extending the life of our planet. Fernie has the opportunity to be a leader in sustainability, showing that even small communities can make big differences. Let’s seize it.
