elsieParticipant
I’ve worked in vet hospitals in the past and interacted with dozens of vets, the vet in Fernie is hot and cold, not sure if he really cares, his bedside manner definitely leaves something to be deserved. I think that’s why so many people go to the Crowsnest Pass or Cranbrook.
There’s certainly room for a small practice, you could service the Elk Valley, not just Fernie (that’s Sparwood, and Elkford).
If you have any large animal experience that helps as well, there are quite a few ranches and horse farms within 50k.
Good luck!
elsieParticipantTigermilk I think your post is spot-on.
When I first moved to Fernie I expected there to be a really vibrant music scene. Hats off to those who are trying, but let’s face it it is pretty barren.
I’m wondering if it’s because Calgary doesn’t get a great amount of good music since the country thing is so big there? Just a thought…
Anyhoo, any efforts you make to get some bands here that we a) haven’t had three hundred times before or b) aren’t that great, would be totally supported by this wallet.
good luck
elsieParticipantHey, I’m not sure your realize, I’m not talking about revenues, I’m talking about service and growing your business by serving more than the bottom line.
Everyone in business is in business for one reason, and that’s to make money. Simple, right?
The difference between effective, strategic businesses and those that flounder is their ability to be innovative, to anticipate the market, and to grow their customer base over the long term.
Everyone knows that Intrawest does a great job at this, however you feel about their mega-resorts. What’s so hard about treating your customers with courtesy, respect and rewarding their loyalty?
Sometimes it seems like season pass holders in Fernie are seen as the lowest on the food chain by RCR. I don’t care how you cut it, a customer is a customer; it’s basic. They should appreciate and value the business, period.
elsieParticipantLet’s say you go to the grocery store, and you want to buy some apples.
The apples are all kept in special bags, and to open the bag, you need to buy an apple pass.
You purchase your apple pass for $10. You go to open the bag, only to find that half the apples cannot be eaten, at least for another 2 to 3 weeks. However, the apples were full price.
What do you do? You need to make a pie today!Answer: You go back to the store, you talk to the manager, they give you a discount and or you can return your apples.
And they do it courteously, because they want you to buy more apples. Perhaps they might even give you a free orange to ensure they keep their customer happy.
elsieParticipantRe: You got to understand that all those people hanging out in the pipe are not spending any money at the ski hill. They want people skiing there that are buying lunch, new gloves and hat, dinner, etc. etc. etc. I bet that you and all your friends didn’t put more that $100 dollars (excluding your passes) into the ski hill last year[
First of all, we’re all spending money at the ski hill if we’re going there.
Second, the purchase of a pass is nothing to sneeze at…we’re talking $1000 and that’s a big ticket purchase by any standards for the average person.
Thirdly, Fernie is quickly losing ground to all the other resorts in this region (BC Rockies/Purcells/Banff) in addition to Whistler, the Colorado group and everyone else in the world, and it’s primarily since they haven’t had a significant increase in services, expansion in terrain, or additional real estate development in a while. This is a bit off topic re the pipe, but the fact is, any subtraction in service is a bad thing. It’s one thing to remove the pipe and make the park twice as good as last year, it’s another to randomly reduce service and not increase it elsewhere.
Sorry, the “Kokanee Deck” just doesn’t cut it.elsieParticipantYes, there is a Kennel, the lady is really nice – it’s just outside of town toward the ski hill.
It’s called Jesse’s Boarding Kennels.
elsieParticipantHey guys, just a note on Fernie gear…the weather here is much different than Banff. It can vary as much as 20 degrees; you might have rain in January and minus 10 degrees in late March or April.
All this to say, ensure you bring clothing you can layer easily (add or subtract as required) and most importantly, MAKE SURE your outerwear is water proof (not water resistant – useless).
The reason Fernie gets such great powder is because the snow often flies just on the cusp of becoming rain; frequently it’ll be raining down below when the snow is flying in the bowls.
Hope this is helpful.November 17, 2004 at 10:14 pm in reply to: University of Regina-55 or 110 ppl -spring break info please #13320elsieParticipantLet’s get this straight, this is info not a recommendation…and also based on last year. This year a few of the bars are under new ownership so it’s a bit hard to tell which nights will be busier…
The Griz Bar (on the hill) very busy apres ski
The Fernie – Fridays, Name That Tune is popular
The Royal – Thursday is Jam night
The Eldo – Friday/Saturday, very busy if they have a band or dj
The Central – apres ski and bands ont the weekendsNot sure about The Northern, it’s really nice inside now, I think they’re planning on having bands and djs but the schedule is unclear…
elsieParticipantI personally have not been to Whistler so I can’t give a totally detailed comparison, but in passing I have heard Whistler compared to Disneyland, whereas Fernie is a true working town. If the ski hill weren’t here, Fernie would still exist, which gives it kind of a unique twist. The cost of living is very reasonable. You should easily find a room for $400 for the winter, the earlier you come and the longer you commit to a place, the better for you price-wise. Groceries are not cheap but they certainly can’t be more expensive than the coast! A pass is cheap if you work at the hill, otherwise, it’s pricey but you’ll get many many days in since the weekdays are not busy at all – it’s great for those working weekends.
Fernie is a great place to live and work, I think you’ll find it a positive move. If you’re looking for lots of services and chain stores like The Gap, it’s the wrong place, but otherwise it’s great!
elsieParticipantHi Tabisso –
My fiance and I own a 3 bedroom house in Fernie and we are looking for one roomate for the winter.
We are converting one room into an office, which you could use for work and we will have internet access (ADSL).
We do have some pets however, in case you are allergic. Anyway, if you’re interested let us know. $400 all incl.
elsieParticipantBike reports and photos will be coming on a more regular basis on the following link and posted in the forum in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
elsieParticipantHi. I might be able to help. Possibly driving in to Calgary on Saturday March 13.
Are you ok with splitting on the gas?
Let me know if you are interested and what time you need to be there…if any. I’m planning on leaving around noonish.
elsieParticipantPlease check with the Bylaw Officer at the City of Fernie (423-6817). Her name is Shirley.
We got our dog Rudy from the pound in Fernie, he was $1 and is a retriever mix…he has truly proven to be the best dog in the world, great personality, gentle, wonderful in the outdoors.
The Fernie pound gets dogs in periodically and they are usually from jerks who live here for a few months and want a puppy to look cool for a while to go with their temporary lifestyle. These dogs need homes!
There’s also an SPCA in Cranbrook.
Good luck.
elsieParticipantAlso check with the resort for stuff to do…they do have sleigh rides and other stuff like that in addition to skiing and boarding.
elsieParticipantHi …you are correct on the distance, give or take snow conditions. Don’t attempt that highway unless it’s good weather. I was stuck travelling to Golden on #95 in a snowstorm and it was scary.
On the way, there is not much other than Radium, except for Panorama…bit more of a family scene than Golden or Fernie, I have heard.
Good luck on your travels!
