The BC Resource Road Access Survey is asking Elk Valley residents to identify the resource roads that matter for outdoor recreation.
Many trails, lakes, rivers, cabins, campsites, riding areas and backcountry destinations around Fernie are reached using roads originally built for forestry and other resource industries. When these roads are gated, washed out, deactivated or no longer maintained, recreation access can be restricted or lost.
The new provincial survey is gathering local knowledge about important access routes, roads at risk of closure or deactivation, current barriers and possible solutions.
Outdoor users do not need detailed or perfect information. Local knowledge, photos, maps, examples and personal experiences are all useful. Respondents are asked to complete a separate survey for each recreation destination or road system they know.
The information will help create a provincial inventory of resource roads important to recreation and support future discussions with governments, recreation organizations, industry, land managers and funding partners. Nearly 200 reports have already been submitted.
