Canyon Raft Company owners Lynn Muller and Blair Craig presented the Fernie Whitewater Park Society with a cheque for $2650. The funds were raised from the annual Fernie Raft Race, a fun event organized by Canyon Raft.
The Fernie Whitewater Park Society is not for profit group of volunteers working towards creating a surf wave on the Elk River in the City of Fernie. To ensure that such a river facility will be everything it can be to all river users, the world’s leading whitewater park designer, Scott Shipley of S20 Designs, was contracted to create concept plans. These plans have been well received by key stakeholders and river user groups in the Elk Valley.
Today there are over 50 whitewater parks in North America, with several in Alberta and Ontario and one in BC. The trend is growing and soon many communities with suitable rivers will have parks. These parks have become a great source of recreation, education and economic benefit. Kimberley, Revelstoke and Golden BC are currently planning to construct whitewater parks.
At present the society is working towards securing the required provincial and federal permitting to allow the project to proceed. The funds from Canyon Raft and the Fernie Raft Race will help with expenses incurred during the permitting phase.
On receiving the required permits the group will be looking to raise additional funds with the public and multiple levels of government and industry.
Canyon Raft Company was started by Blair Craig and Lynn Muller in 1995 and they have been rafting the Elk and Bull Rivers ever since. No matter what section of river you chose to run, their experience and professional and fun approach are what make Canyon Raft Company special.
