We perch on the cusp of summer, about to fall. In the last three days, my crab apple tree moved from bare to fully leaved. Little purple fresh leaves seemingly from nothing.

Fernie crab tree

As always in this late spring, I wonder at the colors. The apple blossoms on the back yard tree. The sharp green of the new tamarack needles. The depth green in the lawn before the first cut.

I always let my lawn go long, to get established and then do a first cut. I say it’s for the lawn, but if I really looked at the issues, I’d have to say it was pure laziness after a winter of lawn cutting freedom. I’ve never been a lawn fan. The people spending days primping and pampering their lawn carry a completely different genetic code. Ensuring the grass is the right sort and there are no patches of crabgrass is not in my make-up

If my lawn’s green, all’s good. That’s as simple as it gets.

We’ve had one night out around the fire ring. Another half planned, maybe in the works this weekend. The tank on the BBQ needs filling. The wood scraps from the winter need to be organized in the bin under the outside stairs. I still have to rake the winter debris from under the willow and get gas for the mower before I think about cutting the grass.

We slide into summer with a casual ease.
