Heiko and Linda Socher are being inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2026, a fitting national recognition for the couple whose vision and hard work helped build Fernie into the ski community it is today.
For Fernie, few names are more closely connected with the development of skiing.
Beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Heiko and Linda helped transform Fernie Snow Valley from a small community ski hill into the destination that would eventually become Fernie Alpine Resort.
Over approximately 25 years, Heiko oversaw the growth of the mountain from roughly 30,000 annual skier visits to more than 220,000. New chairlifts were constructed, international resort planners were brought in and Fernie’s powder skiing increasingly attracted attention well beyond the Elk Valley.
Heiko also helped create The Griz, the legendary mountain character that became synonymous with Fernie’s deep snow and eventually an official symbol of the City of Fernie.
Linda was equally important to the development of Fernie’s ski culture. She founded Ski Base, established Fernie’s first ski school, became a certified Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance instructor and spent decades introducing local children to skiing.
Their influence also extended to the next generation. Their son, Ralf Socher, became a Canadian national downhill champion and represented Canada in alpine skiing at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer.
Heiko’s contribution to Fernie continued long after the ski hill was sold. In retirement, he personally built what became Heiko’s Trail, one of Fernie’s signature alpine hiking routes and another lasting contribution to the community.
Heiko passed away in 2016, but his influence remains visible across Fernie — on the ski hill, along the trails and throughout a community that increasingly built its identity around mountain recreation.
Linda continues that remarkable connection with skiing. At 88, she remains an active skier and is reported to still log approximately 100 days on snow each year. In the off-season she bikes in Fernie and other destinations around the world.
The Canadian Ski Hall of Fame recognizes Canadians whose competitive achievements or contributions have significantly advanced skiing and snowboarding. Founded in 1982, it honours the athletes, pioneers, coaches, builders and visionaries who have shaped Canadian snowsports.
