Evergreens Farm is coming to Fernie and will grow leafy greens for local consumption year around starting this Spring!
In a momentous stride towards building a stronger food system, Wildsight Elk Valley is excited to introduce “Evergreens,” a hydroponic farm designed and built by ColdAcre. This spring, the 10×50’ structure will be installed at the Community EcoGarden in Prentice Park.
Embracing the challenges of Fernie’s cold climate, Evergreens leverages cutting-edge technology to grow leafy greens 365 days a year. Wildsight staff recently spent two weeks at the ColdAcre Food Systems Center in Whitehorse, Yukon learning how to operate the controlled environment system.
Once fully operational, Evergreens is expected to grow roughly 500 heads of pesticide-free, locally-grown, leafy greens weekly. The leafy greens will be available at Local, Fernie grocery stores, select local restaurants, and donated to vulnerable community members.
ColdAcre was created to make a difference in Indigenous and Northern communities by providing access and the means to reliable, community-grown fresh produce. The business is a subsidiary of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun Development Corporation, the active business arm of the First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun.
