Fernie Ghostriders Home Openers are here this weekend after the Riders opened the regular season with three straight games on the road, earning four of a possible six points.
Fernie returns home to the Memorial Arena this weekend to face Revelstoke on Friday and the Columbia Valley Rockies on Saturday.
It was a demanding way to begin the inaugural BCHC season, but Head Coach and General Manager Chad Scharff liked what the opening road trip revealed about his team.
“That was a great test for us in the first weekend of the inaugural BCHC season. The trip had a little bit of everything… getting used to new travel schedules, finding lines and chemistry between players, a regulation win, a game where we were outplayed, and a bounce-back third game in three nights win in a shootout.”
Scharff said taking four of six points from the three-game road swing was a strong start.
“There are a lot of things we can take away from this weekend. Highs, lows and everything in between, but I’m happy with the start. Getting 4/6 points is huge. Time to get some rest this week and get back to work to prepare for an exciting weekend at home.”
Three Road Games to Start the Season
The Ghostriders opened Friday in Grand Forks with a convincing 4–0 win.
Leo den Besten earned the shutout as Fernie held a 33–18 advantage in shots. Special teams were a major factor, with the Riders scoring twice on the power play, adding a shorthanded goal and killing all six Grand Forks power plays.
Saturday in Beaver Valley, Fernie fell 4–2 to the Hawks. Kael Svenson made several big saves to keep the Riders within reach before an empty-net goal sealed the result.
Fernie bounced back Sunday afternoon in Nelson, earning a 3–2 shootout victory in its third road game in three days.
Sawyer Samycia and Carter Singleton scored in regulation before Boston Logan scored the shootout winner. Den Besten stopped all five Nelson shooters to earn his second win of the season.
Scharff was pleased with the performance throughout the lineup.
“We got great goaltending from both Leo and Svenny and some unreal performances from a lot of guys, but Carter Singleton was our best forward and Liam Breakenridge was a leader through and through. Sawyer Samycia and Stephen Jones were our work horses. Happy with the entire group, lots to look forward to.”
Home Games This Weekend
After opening the season entirely on the road, the Ghostriders finally get to play in front of the Fernie crowd.
Revelstoke visits Friday, followed by the Columbia Valley Rockies on Saturday.
Three road games are behind them. Now it’s time to fill the barn and welcome the Riders home.
