PM me and I can hook you up with Nic’s number.. He’s a great young local kid who loves to film and does great work..
young_localParticipantSensored by a threat from Sunshine Villages lawyers
young_localParticipantDidn’t know I wasn’t chill… you post one thing having some fun, I post one on what I "would have" said if they interviewed me…
No sledding today, If I can’t see two feet in front of my face it might as well be in white pass…. see you out thereyoung_localParticipantThe worst part about this is that both sides are in the wrong. Give it a rest people… I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t get how you can bash ?¢‚Ǩ?ìlocal hicks?¢‚Ǩ¬ù and then turn around and bash anyone visiting. Grow up. What do you consider yourself as then Todd?
How about this one.
Interview with a local…meTALKIN’ PROUD – Leslie Woit of Ski Canada chatted with some passionate locals …
What do you love about Fernie?
I love that I can ride (a snowboard as well as a sled) and play hockey with guys from all over the world in the winter. Then as soon as winter ends I can bring out the bike, golf clubs, and drift boat… You can never be bored in Fernie. What don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t you love?
The people who complain. I don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t care if you are a local ?¢‚Ǩ?ìhick?¢‚Ǩ¬ù, a Calgarian, or someone in between that somehow thinks they are better than both of those. If you are in Fernie for the same reasons as me, it?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s because you love it here and can?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t get enough of the lifestyle. If you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re in Fernie because you grew up here and have never left, great, I can respect anyone working at the mines, or logging, etc… if it wasn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t for the mine, none of us would be here. If you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re an Aussie, Kiwi, Brit, or from Calgary, glad you came to see all that Fernie has to offer. Tell all your friends, there?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s plenty room for more. Why aren?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t you somewhere else?
Spend a few weeks here and then try to ask yourself the same question. I have left, and I do leave, but Fernie is my home. What can a one-week visitor appreciate here as much as a local like you?
Everything. Start out your day with a big banger, then head to the rink and play shinny with the old guys. Once that?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s done rip up to the hill for some ?¢‚Ǩ?ìlegendary?¢‚Ǩ¬ù powder. Hit the Griz bar for an apr?ɬ®s drink, then get down to yamagoya and stand in line for some unreal sushi. Once you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re full, head up to one of the bars for some live music and more drinks. Day two- repeat. Maybe throw in a ghostrider hockey game to top off the night. Day three- if you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢re tired from skiing, why not go ice fishing? Great fishing around here… Day 4: ski day. Day 5: If you can, go Catskiing with one of the two companies… Day 6- dogsledding anyone? Try it- you?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ll love it. Day 7- pack up, but then decide you want to do it all over again and stay for a while longer…Give us a secret. C?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢mon, you know you want to!
The only reason I said there?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s plenty of room for more is because of the secrets. What sets the skiing here apart from all the others?
15cm weekday mornings. Fresh, no lines, everyone having a blast. What are you looking forward to most this winter?
Griz days is going to be a blast as always.
Do you owe anybody money?
I bet on Ferrer upsetting Murray, so I guess I owe my buddy a jug now.young_localParticipantOr they could have had someone born and raised in Fernie?
January 20, 2011 at 11:37 pm in reply to: Should there be a national park in the Flathead Valley? #19853young_localParticipantGreat post TeleBoy.. What this special management will be is still up for debate. But the facts are known. National Parks in Canada (Lake Louise, Banff) have the HIGHEST mortality rate for grizzly bears. Why would we knowingly go and do this?
I have questioned many of Wildsight (or Flathead Wild)’s motives many times. They have a "keep it wild" campaign on right now, where they encourage you to:
"Call, email or write British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell and Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper.
Let them know that you support a national park in the southeastern one-third of the Flathead, to fill in the missing piece of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, and a Wildlife Management Area in the rest of the valley and adjoining habitat."
Why, oh why would they suggest this? They want to keep the Flathead wild, yet they want a park like Glacier? The only time I have been to Glacier a habituated mountain goat was causing trouble in the "park" as it was licking the salt off of tourists tires. That sure seems "wild" to me… I won’t be back.
Don’t like that example? Have this one… http://www.allvoices.com/contributed-ne … -be-killed
What interests me about the "wild" campaign, is that it goes hand in hand with their "complete it, protect it, connect it" campaign. If you haven’t seen the photos I encourage you to have a look at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid= … 2591403771 Just scroll through the pictures and let me know what you think. I think they might have left out the "pave it!" sign for some reason… Because if the Flathead becomes "protected", that is how it will look.
I spent a good number of days in the Flathead this summer, seeing 13 different grizzly bears and 6 vehicles over at least ten days.. If you spent 10 days in Glacier Nat’l Park, you may see one or two grizzlies (maybe?) and at 2,031,348 visitors in 2009 that works out to be about… 13,913 vehicles (generously estimating 4 people per vehicle).young_localParticipantFor some good local info, go down to FWA and talk to Kim or Brian. The shop is located in the lobby of the park place lodge (right off the highway). http://www.fernieadventures.com
young_localParticipantBrutal. Once again a small group of people ruin it for the rest of us… It is both locals (in this area, I would think it is mainly locals) and nonlocals. But this is a common place for high school students to party, or at least it used to be… It wasn’t too long ago when I was in highschool, and I think they do the same thing now- coal creek is the last party of the school year, the "honking party" where grads (with the help of dd’s) drive around fernie and wake up all you old folk to celebrate a safe end to their high school. You guys started it many years ago, and it’s a great tradition… but it’s time for someone to step up and do some clean-up after the party. Out of our 70 some odd grads, 25 or so show showed up to coal creek the day after our big party to clean the place up. This years grads need to start doing that again.

I like the fact that I can snowmobile, snowboard, golf, and fish, all in the same day if I wanted. And then head out to the lake for a boat ride. (Only happens once every couple of years.. but it’s pretty cool when it works out)
young_localParticipantWell, if the ski hill closes, that means that everything other then the mines/mills close… which in turn means that all those 3/4/5 generation ferniette will most likely leave anyways. Who wants to stay in a town where you can’t do all the things you grew up doing? Come on, you know that tourism is a huge part to Fernie’s economy, even if it drives prices up… I am a fourth generation Ferniette and I hope to raise my kids here… I know it’s going to be expensive but thats what you get when you want to live in the best valley in the world… Go to school, get a degree/trade, work hard, pay off your loans, get a good job, and BAM… no more complaining about the prices, because you have the money. There are enough jobs in this valley to support us all, and it’s only going to start growing again.
happy1: One other thing I forgot to mention was that this whole valley is one great community. Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, Jaffray are all connected and it truly is great to see. If you have kids in high school don’t be surprised if they want to go to sparwood for the weekend or go camping with everyone from all 3 high schools… Thanks to the merger of our minor hockey leagues, highschool kids in all of the valley are now connected and it truly is great to see.
If one town has a tragedy, all the communities get together and support each other. You won’t find that in very many places around the world.young_localParticipantWith Fernie you get a little bit of everything. You get the retired people who have broke there backs just to make a buck. and put in many long hard years in the coal mines, back roads, etc, and now they are staying to watch their grandchildren grow up. Then you get the local baby boomers who make up a large part of the population, also breaking their backs to be able to raise their kids here. Then there’s the "albertans/australians/non locals" who all get grouped into the same basket with some of the vocal locals who don’t quiet see that we need them to survive… But they get over it eventually!
Fernie is a safe place to grow your family and enjoy everything there is great about BC and Canada.
April 16, 2010 at 12:55 am in reply to: Public Comment and Open House for new Elk Valley mines #18371young_localParticipantReally? You guys are going to "suggest" comments for people to make. Do you really think the bc gov’t/tech coal is going to take any of the 100 comments made that are worded the EXACT same as wildsight’s comments? Why not tell people to research the facts and come up with their OWN opinion.. rather than setting out "suggested comments that will save the world". I mean, come on guys… as someone stated on ourfernie "why don’t you tell me what to think, too". You lose your legitimacy in my opinion when you have everyone posting the exact same comments. For all anyone knows, these people just support wildsight so they took two minutes to copy-paste the comments rather than actually look up some facts.
Sorry, but I’m just getting sick of wildsight’s (ryland and casey’s?) opinions being shoved down my throat, and if I don’t agree then I am an oil-loving, big corporation supporting s.o.b…
young_localParticipantI don’t think that your feelings are wrong. And let me state that I do not own a dog, and I do not walk a dog. I would however pick it up if i did, but not because I think it’s the right thing to do.. because I know other people appreciate it and it’s a bylaw. But I must say, if we are trying to be green and responsible, why are we using plastic bags every time to pick up our dogs crap… I mean, it will be gone in a couple days anyways, but that plastic lasts forever. If we’re trying to reduce our footprint.. pick up your dogs crap with a garden tool or rock or stick or something, and throw it in the bushes… that would save on having to use a plastic bag every time. The only problem I have is when people let their dogs run on the soccer fields around the schools. I actively play soccer and it’s just not a good time if you slide for the ball and wind up with something other than dirt on your leg.
young_localParticipantI wonder if it is because I am not slandering you or your affiliated oranizations, but why do my posts never seem to get a legitimate response? Possibly because you may think I actually have a point?
