Judging by your description of what these dogs have done I would surmise that there may be criminal matters involved. Certainly allowing a dog to threaten children, or to kill your dog would warrent a visit to the RCMP. I am curious as to why you would not have already pursued this course of action ?

Good luck with what sounds like a very frustrating and dangerous situation.

hmmm I’m not sure if I trust the gov’t any more than BP. And I’m really distrustful of the politicians crawling out of the woodwork to participate in a congressional BBQ session of BP execs – after the fact. There voices where silent, there ignorance astonishing, as onsite gov’t regulators approved the decsions and actions being taken on the rig pre-explosion. Now they come out of the woodwork to grill the easy fish BP execs. They are all culpable. The real question for me, in my backyard is this: BP is about to embark on a large coal bed methane development project in this valley. The precidents for environmental impacts are already well layed out. We also need the gas, and most homes and businesses in Fernie use NG. So what are we going to do now ?

For me the issue of trusting BP is relavent. Trusting CBM development itself is also another item. There are many well documented cases of horrendous environmental impacts as a DIRECT result of CBM wells. As I understand it two big issues stand out. 1) Dewatering the coalbed aquifrrs also dewaters connected aquifes ( like ones we use for fresh drinking water ) The disposition of the water ( loaded with alkline chemicals and hydrocarbons ) that is pumped off of the coal seams to release the gas is highly problematic. What do you do with all of this saline, alkiline, hydrocarbon loaded polluted water ? The answers coming from industry are in many cases less than acceptable. Just look at what has happened in the Powderkeg Basin in the US. 2) The use of hydrolic fractuing is a common practice in CBM development. The well pipe/casing is perforated and high pressure hydrolic fracing fluid ( a real chemical cocktail ) is injected to break up the coal seam and provide pathways for the gas to escape up the pipe. The problem of course is that this high presure fracing drives the fluid, and gas into adjacent aquifers. Just check out some articles about well water contamination in Rosebud Alberta…it’s really terrible. The energy industry will fight tooth and nail to claim that their fracing operations did not cause methane in your fresh water well – nice.
For me, I am highly suspicous of CBM development. There is way too many cases where it is well documented that it has caused horrendous environmental impacts, and I’m hard pressed to find many cases where the reverse is true. As for BP, well their business practices suggest that they are quite comfortable playing at the top of the risk scale and if shit happens then they will deal with it then – until then drill baby drill !
ALso does anyone have any idea why the MistMountain CBM project got a "pass" on the environmental assessment? What is with that ?

Sarcasm "is the use of words to damage the reputation of, or hurt, another person. It is a sharp, bitter, or cutting expression or remark; a bitter jibe or taunt."

Yes please forgive my stupidity, how might I have known? As outrageous as my post may have been, I missed the connection between this thread about irresponsible dog owners, and your "Lets Ban Calgarians" "Calgarians eat at McDs and dump their garbage ….", "Calgarians throw slurpees from motor vehicles at bicyclists and laugh" posting. Well heck, your posting didn’t even mention dogshit…only Albertans and Calgarians! How blind of me, I really should have made the connection…and ignored the apparent message.

b.t.w. Litterbugs are not my friends.

Mikes – Thank you for your concern about a possible anurism on my part. Fortunatly, I’ve had a home in Fernie for years and my heart is much stronger for it – its always a good workout running from the Calgarian haters…and a great stress reliever watching them back peddle – keeps my heart young. Like I said …keep up the good work… I had a feeling you wouldn’t let me down……oh was this thread about dogshit ?

    Hi Mikes

I have a better idea – and you won’t have to go through the bother, time and effort convincing city council to pass it.

Why don’t you keep espousing hatred for vistors even louder than you do…maybe establish a website devoted to it. Make sure as many people as you can convince become haters of visitors. Travel the parking spots along the river, and when you see an alberta visitor license slash the tires. At night, get liquourd up and with your friends stalk people walking around town and randomly assault them ( oh and do the job right and make sure you send them to hospital ! ). Make fernie as toxic as you can for visitors and you will get what you want without all the bother of city council having to pass a "ban Calgarians law".

Oh and do make sure that you continue to spew hatred on public web forums. Ths is extremly effective at getting your messgae out. These are read my many prospective visitors and its a very effective way to get your message accross – I would say its one of the best ways to damage Fernie’s reputation and establish it as one of not welcoming. …That way you will create the image of Fernie that you envision. Oh and by the way – once you’ve accomplished your goals of firmly establishing the reputation of not welcoming, hate, tourist un-freindly , ensure that you are at the front of the line complaining about the declining local business environment. All the local business owners will be very thankful to you for helping them and repesenting their interest as they sink for lack of customers.

B.T.W. – there was another dogshit on my lawn this morning… and thats what this thread was supposed to be about before you highjacked it to promote your agenda. Thats ok though because its all about you. Keep up the hatred and the good work of damaging Fernie’s reputation – your very good at it.

Hmm well I know one of the prevous posts suggesting that we simply ban dogs in Fernie was made in jest. If however the behaivour of irresponsible dog owners continues why not ?I am not a dog owner. I like dogs but I don’t own one – mainly because of the work and responsibility involved. My lot is regularly soiled with dog shit. I regularly see dogs being walked, many times unleashed, crapping as dogs do, and the owner simply keeps walking along and doesn’t pick it up. So I believe that Fernie residents should not have to put up with this kind of behaivour. If it continues – why not ban dogs? If owners want the the right to own dogs, then they should be responsible for them or revoke the right to own them. Simple. Why should anyoe else have to put up with this? I find the city woefully irrespnsible in enforcing the by-law as well.

As previous posters have mentioned – vote with your wallet ! Do not support extra foods, if your more satisfied with overW. give them your business. B.T.W. I’m surprised noone has mentioned the terrible meat section at extra foods. The overW. meat dept. is much better – and if you can’t see what you want the staff are usually helpful in cutting you something you are looking for. I give my business to overW. after many unsatisfying experiences at extra foods.

South Calgary is 3 hours from Fernie on Hwy 22. I always check the road report before I go out on Friday evening. If sketchy I take Hwy 2 – I also make the call not to go more often than I used to after some frightening drives.

Some interesting points of view. A theme that I find intolerable however is that criminally assaulting someone ( with associated injury ) is somehow justified by either the nature of the town ( it’s a mining town etc ) or the person assaulting another is just a “redneck”. Another poor one is the person is not a local. Many many people live and visit Fernie that are from other parts of our great country – we have freedom to move in this country and it is a precious right. Just because someone did not grow up in the Elk Valleyis not a reason to be hospitalized by some thug hiding beind the moniker of a local, coal miner or sawmill worker. Similarly if someone is impoilte then they display their ignorance – you can’t justify smashing there head in for it.
These are all very poor excuses to hide behind and am surpised by some of the themes on this thread that are making light of it or at worst attempting to justify it. These excuses do not justify in any way the beating of another person. The victim can be injured and affected for Life… and my family has first hand experience with the after effects.

I could have my numbers wrong but as far as I know the current CO2 production is 30 million tons per year from oil sands plants. Without some sort of regulation the plans call for a ramp up to 165 million tons – so much for Kyoto.

An intereting point is that most of the ramped up production will go to the US. The US consumes more daily oil production than the next 5 countries combined – and increasing. So what we seem to be doing as a country is allowing US interests to invest mega $ here ( like 100 billion ) to ramp up oilsand production and then they will burn it as fast as they possibily can…hmm where is the logic in this ?

    Hi Wilko

Hmmmm – two quite different replies you’ve had. Jeff P-yo seems to say throw caution to the wind and go for it while Alba seems informed, in the market already and cautious. While Alba may not relish the prospect of more competition, they sound like they are having a challenge making a go of it – I’m not surprised.

I am a recreational home owner in Fernie, and have often considered developing a portion of my property to target foreign vistors. While you are considering somthing much more involved, I haven’t done even a simpler version as I’ve always had trouble “making the numbers work”. You will get ski season visitors for the mid DEC-APR timeframe. Then from a recreational visitor perpective you can pretty much forget it. In the off ski season the vacancy rate for most every type of accomodation soars. Do your homework, be prepared to float this venture for a while be fore you break even and Good luck whatever you choose.

After too many similar incidents over the years I simply have stopped renting out rooms in my home. I could really use the income, but when I consider the financial risk of damage ( even taking into account a deposit ) I don’t view it as a good risk. This “weed town” reputation really does attract the wrong type of renters….and it’s so hard tell – at least for an old guy like me :( Wasn’t there a magazine article over the last few years that promoted the weed town stereotype ? I’ll sign up to send a letter to that editor if I knew the mag……
