Why? One word: POWDER! Waist and in some places neck deep!

One word of caution to you Tabisso, Fernie is not a Snowboard friendly mountain. The backcountry is spectacular, but has challenged even the best of the best snowboarder from near and far. You may want to bring your skis or stay at Whistler dude… 8)

…there are many tourists from Australia and New Zealand who travel to Fernie, BC each year to work and ski etc.. I am curious to know how Fernie get’s on your radar screen and what sort of information you hear about the resort?

Typically, I meet many Europeans who visit in the Winter, but it is the Aussies and Kiwi’s who primarily come to work and hang out longer etc.

Why is Fernie so popular Down Under? And do these tourists come from urban or rural areas of your country?

    Peace

    Well said Griz-Boy….well said. Bravo!!

    Alycia,
It is quite transparent from your postings that you have a very large “chip” on your shoulder.

I have never come across people who live in Fernie that share your views. In fact, my experience has been quite the contrary. At first I thought your anger might be a result of the bitter cold in Ft. McMurray that’s made you this way…but in fact, I am quite convinced now that it’s really just a reflection of your ignorance.

    Griz-boy,

I remember the first year I skied Fernie, there was this clown on the hill skiing “Dancer” with a lumber jacket and jeans on…..we were laughing at this guy because he did not have a care in the world and was hot dogging until he bailed real badly. We saw him later at the Bear’s Den drinking scotch from a flask – real hardcore, he must have been freezing! I believe he told us that he was from a place called Gatineau?

RE: Snorkel….what were last year’s conditions like? Did you need one??

    Peace.

    Griz-Boy,

Nice!! Sounds beautiful. I will need to visit this “Island Lake Lodge” and experience the cat skiing for myself. The more remote the better. Right? I will have to plan for this during my couple of weeks holiday to Fernie next year (March 2005).

What’s that Festival like in the Summer? Any live music? Any Jambands around the region?

    Peace

..I have heard that the “Royal” is a good spot to tee-it-up after a full day of skiing waist deep in powder!!!

Anybody know how Island Lake Lodge does in the Winter months? I have heard that they get some good bands from time to time and that the food is very good – I would guess this is likely for special events?

    Peace.

….with temperatures up on the mountain ranging from +5 to -15C…jeans and a good parka will do the trick here.

P.S. Do you plan on working when you’re here? Or just spending a lot of money and contributing to the local economy?

Oh, I get it…..these are basically people who live in British Columbia?

No need to get uptight. Every ski town around the world has kids who move in, are trying to find themselves, want to run away from responsibility, while pursuing their passion for skiing. Nothing unusual with that. I see lots of Granolas when I ski in Colorado, Utah, and parts of Idaho. I actually like the Granolas. Much nicer than the hillbillies from the Australian outback who visit your beautiful country just to piss on it.

So it sounds like you have real issues with the Eldorado Lounge. Are there other places in town to hang out, experience live music, consume alcohol and have a good time?

Here is my question to you: As a ski town, where in Fernie are young people who are cool, don’t wear salvation army clothes, smell like Abercrombie, go to Ivy League schools and have lots of money supposted to hang out??

I love Texas! Don’t mess with it. Right? I had a great time in Austin a little while back…

Bob, I live in Boston (I’m not originally from Massachusetts, nor do I support John Kerry).

    Cheers!

Thanks Ik. Much appreciated. I look forward to exploring the area, and meeting the locals. I fell in love with Fernie a few years ago. I promised myself that I would be back someday to chill, build a home (to always access that great skiing) and give back to the community.

    Take care.
