Best time is about right now. Reason is that winter hiring begins and accomodation is still availiable.
You probably won’t be novice after skiing a season in Fernie. If you are looking for groomed runs then Fernie is not the place, you might want to research Alberta ski resorts (Nakiska, Norquay, Lake Louise).
Kayaking is best when the winter run off begins.
The nightlife is as good as you make it, there is 5 good bar/pubs, 1 is a semi club atmosphere.
anonymousParticipantI’d like to draw everyone’s attention to a question and answer session with the Canadian Ski Patrol system in Fernie. This is a chance to get out and meet us and ask some questions face-to-face rather than reading our website. We have two nights scheduled for this, September 9 and 17 from 7-9pm. You can find us at the Blue Toque in the Fernie Arts Station. There
will be some handouts on what it costs, what we get, expectations etc. Training starts on Saturday, September 18, so please drop in and see us.Thanks – Ski you real soon!
anonymousParticipantA better discription of a toque would be a wollen or fleece cap the fits over the head snugly and comes down far enough to cover at least the tops of the ears. Not always necessary if one is wearing a helmet while on the slopes, but that’s my personal bias as a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol System showing through. See you on the slopes!!
anonymousParticipantHey read the announcemnet in this forum it will give you a better idea. It alll depends when you arrive, If you are early then no problem. If you come in December January, it can be a bit of a hunt if you are picky on your accom. It took friends from Aust. 2 weeks before they found anything last year and that was just rooming with 4 other guys!
anonymousParticipant667 Days!
anonymousParticipantpersonally, i still feel he park would do so much better right underneith the deer chair, look how much succes the Lake has had by putting showtime under its chairs, also u ahve to have a commited team to grrom the park and maintain rails,as of now since fernie doesnt have the dedication it needs for park staff i think its only fair to say get pre made rails from D railed design team(ironicly enought fernie is supposidly sponcered by them) and also get local feed back, have feed back sessions at local shops have contests every weekend rider input is a must
anonymousParticipantGet your bike ready because the riding here is awesome and places like Nelson and Kamloops are right next door to us.
The town really slows down in the summer, so expect mostly everything to close at 5pm. Hard to find a coffee shop to go sit down in.
The good thing about summer is that you will get to meet alot of the local riders and skiers that make Fernie there all season playground.
Have Fun!
anonymousParticipantThere are two Cat Skiing operations in Fernie:
Island Lake: The most expensive of the two but they will definately look after you. I went with them in December and it is still the best day of boarding this year. Island Lake fills up fast because of its international status, 5 star in my mind. Another option is Powder Cowboy Cat Skiing, owned by the same copamy, however at a smaller scale. Which means a cheaper price! Its a bit of a drive if you have to hire a car.
Fernie Wilderness Tours: I went with them last year and had great guides. Good terrain and a good price. Budget prices but not budget skiing. A little more hiking is involved, good for skiier’s bad for boarders. Our guide took digital photos through out the day and had a slide show to cap things off nicely.
You can find the web links on this site.
anonymousParticipantthank you, thank you haha
I miss riding though…that is how I stayed in shape
anonymousParticipantwell my bike is missing cranks, and a back wheel. So it MIGHT be difficult to ride haha
anonymousParticipanthaha I am hoping to get a nice new one eventually. I have a Kona right now, but it needs about 700 dollars worth of new parts.
anonymousParticipantdoes no one say hello around here!? Geez! haha
anonymousParticipantstop ur advertising 11 year old
anonymousParticipantyea for sure,i think it may be a lack of utencils also,if you look at other resorts they have terrain groomer specificly foer builfing jumps, you just set the transition at the base of the jump and it lifts the groomer to its correct angle when u keep moving, also it maybe a a lack of knowledge, most park crews are like 20 guys of which who could all be sponcered for theyre riding abilitys,it takes more that a traillscraper to create nice jumps witht he physics behind it,if it were up to me or the RCR id get Jeff PAtterson down there like once a week to set out goals and teach, look how the LAke turned out best park int eh rockies if no canada right now.
anonymousParticipanthey , sure hope it gets better, correct me if im wrong but is it not Hal Rogers that is head of terrain park and pipe features ont he mountain.I beleive he was handed the torch after that snowboard canada article on his backyard park i may be wrong.I was super disapointed last season with the park,i was there int he begining of march and i was all like yeah its gunna be sick casue in the years past,i guess the 2001-2002 season they had a good 8 boxes and teh tables were primo everyday, last year was a disapointment.so much great things could happen to that place if it stepped it up
