1. Partnering Agreement with the Fernie Chamber of Commerce – Victoria Avenue Initiative and Sunday Downtown Socials
Council approved the partnering agreement with the Fernie Chamber of Commerce for the provision of municipal services in the amount of $10,000 to host the summer downtown festivities. Events such as a night market, street theatre, music and a trunk treasure sale are some of the events planned for the summer. 2. Max Turyk Lease Amendments
Currently there are two long term tenants “Creative Energy Arts Factory” and the “Creative Minds Pre-School” who have occupied space in the old Max Turyk School since 2009. Council authorized notice of their intention to amend the terms of a disposal (lease) for these two groups for a period of 1 year commencing on August 1, 2011, with a right of renewal for 3 additional one year terms for the following rental rate:
Fernie Creative Minds Preschool – $8,906.90 per year
Creative Energy Arts Factory – $7,346.40 per year

3) Regional District of East Kootenay Bylaw No. 2326 Referral Electoral Area A – Miscellaneous Amendments – Elk Valley Zoning Bylaw No. 829, 1990
Miscellaneous amendments to the Elk Valley Zoning Bylaw were identified as a priority project in the RDEK Planning and Development Services 2011 work plan. The above noted bylaw amends a number of the regulations contained in the Elk Valley Zoning Bylaw No. 829. A complete summary of the proposed changes can be viewed at City Hall during normal business hours of 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
4) Banning Cosmetic Chemical Pesticides
The Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon Division is working on a provincial campaign to ban the use and sale of cosmetic chemical lawns and garden pesticides, which included herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides.
Council will be forwarding a letter to the Province in support of this ban.
5) Fernie Mountain Bike Club
Council approved a funding request from the Fernie Mountain Bike Club in the amount of $2000 to be funded from the Resort Municipality Initiative – Cultural and Heritage Tourism and Festivals Program towards the “Wam Bam Dirt Jump Jam” event to be held Saturday, August 20, 2011 behind the Fernie Aquatic Centre.
