1. AGREEMENTS, LICENCES PERMITS & POLICIES
1.1 Development Variance Permit Application No. 376 for the property located at 1362 & 1392 – 5th Council approved Development Variance Permit Application No. DVPA-376 to facilitate a subdivision of the Lands into two separate parcels, the landowners have submitted a Development Variance Permit Application to vary the minimum front yard setback of the two multi family dwelling buildings on the Lands from along a portion of the west property line only and to vary the minimum parcel area for each of two proposed parcels to be created by subdivision of the Lands. 2. BYLAWS
2.1 Bylaw No. 2284, cited as Permissive Tax Exemption Bylaw. Council approved the recommended applicants for Permissive Tax Exemptions and Bylaw No. 2284 was given first, second and third reading RTC.
3. OTHER INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
3.1 Bear Proof Containers – At Council’s invitation, Wildsafe BC and East Kootenay Conservation attended COTW meeting October 13, 2015. Following discussions, Council directed staff to approach Southeast Disposal and gather information regarding the costs and potential issues associated with swapping City owned dumpsters for bear proof dumpsters. Ms. Murray of Wildsafe BC and Sergeant Schley, BC Conservation Office are invited to attend upcoming budget deliberations to provide advice in this regard.
3.2 Fernie and District Senior Citizens Club requested Council provide financial assistance to hire a part time coordinator for the Senior Citizens Club. This position would set up and promote programming to benefit all seniors in the area and ensure the centre continues on into the future. Council referred this item to upcoming budget deliberations.
3.3 Proposed Budget Review Schedule Council accepted the proposed budget review schedule with deliberations scheduled to start November 16, 2015. A town hall meeting will be scheduled to present the budget to the public at a date to be determined.
4. UPCOMING MEETINGS AND OTHER NEWS
4.1 Discretionary Grants for the Budget year 2016 – the City of Fernie is now accepting applications for grant funding for consideration by the Discretionary Grant Committee. Any community groups or organizations that are interested in requesting grant funding from the City for the upcoming year and can demonstrate financial need are encouraged to submit an application. Application Form and Guidelines or for pick-up at City Hall at 501–3rd Avenue. Submission deadline for applications is Friday, October 30, 2015.
Completed applications can be faxed to 250.423.3034, mailed to City Hall, PO Box 190, Fernie, BC V0B 2G0, emailed to carla.fox@fernie.ca or dropped off at City Hall, 501 – 3rd Avenue.
4.2 George S. Majic Spiritus Award – This award, presented annually by the City of Fernie in memory of George Majic was inspired by his family and friends in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont as a way of honoring his life service. Nomination packages are available online or at City Hall. Deadline for submissions is November 13, 2015 at 5:00pm
4.3 Community Voters Challenge! Council Visits Youth
Council spent time engaging youth in our community in response to the Voter Challenge issued by the City of Nelson. The goal was to reflect the spirit of the Voter Challenge which is simply to get people out voting and to use the opportunity to strengthen our relationship with community. Engaging students has been a high priority of Council. Other organizations such as the Fernie Heritage Library have also accepted the challenge!
4.4 Bears in our Community-residents are reminded to comply with Waste Regulation Bylaw No. 1845. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure there are no unnatural food sources available to attract bears into residential areas.
Do your part to keep bears safe and out of our community! Manage your garbage, fruit trees and other bear attractants responsibly!
