The Fernie Valley Pathway Committee has secured funding through a grant application with the BC Government, marking another significant milestone in their efforts. This funding will enable the Fernie Trails Alliance (FTA) to conduct surveying and finalize engineering plans for the last phase of the pathway, bringing the Fernie Valley Pathway (FVP) one step closer to its connection with Fernie Alpine Resort.
The FVP is a collaborative initiative led by the City of Fernie and FTA, aimed at establishing a 7km active transportation network comprising paved and accessible multi-use trails. Once completed, this network will seamlessly link the City of Fernie with Fernie Alpine Resort.
Recognized as an integral component of Fernie’s transportation infrastructure, the FVP plays a crucial role in promoting a comprehensive, multi-modal transportation system that caters to all mobility needs. This initiative is vital for sustaining the city’s economic growth, enhancing livability, and ensuring overall success.
The initial phase of the FVP commenced in 2019, focusing on preliminary design and alignment validation for the future pathway. Supported by a budget of $78,300, this phase was funded through a collaborative partnership involving City of Fernie funds, FTA funds, and BC Rural Dividend Program funds. Under this partnership, the FTA managed the project on behalf of the City, with oversight from the City Project Manager.
In 2021, the City of Fernie secured $1,619,000 to finance the detailed design and construction of a 1.69km section in West Fernie. This segment of the pathway will serve as a vital link connecting central Fernie and its surrounding neighborhoods with Mount Fernie Provincial Park. It aims to provide a safe and inclusive route for residents of Riverside, Anderson Road, and the Cedars, as well as easy access to various businesses and amenities along the highway.
While significant progress has been made, the FTA continues to seek additional funding support to finalize the project. A fundraising goal of $31,500 has been set to ensure the successful completion of the FVP, further emphasizing the importance of community involvement and collaboration in achieving this shared vision.
