Highway #3 between Fernie and Fernie Alpine Resort is getting a much needed change. The very narrow and pedestrian unfriendly bridge over Lizard Creek is being replaced and greatly improved upon. Not only will there be a pedestrian-bicycle lane but underneath there will be a large animal crossing.
Replacing this bridge will support the vital commercial transportation sector, growing industrial activity and tourist traffic, while improving reliability and increasing safety for all highway users.
Built in 1953, the bridge is nearing the end of its service life. While the structure is still safe for users, it is time to begin planning for its replacement. The bridge sees an average of 5,800 vehicles per day (annual average), with summer volumes reaching approximately 9,800 vehicles per day. The bridge crosses Lizard Creek on Highway 3 to link Fernie to the west side of Highway 3, which includes access to the Fernie Alpine Resort on the west side of Lizard Creek Bridge.
Project details include:
– New two -lane structure with 3.6 m lanes, 2 m shoulders, and a 3 m barrier separated multi-use pathway on upstream side of bridge
– Large animal crossing underneath both sides of new structure
– Project will stay on existing highway alignment
-Two lane detour will be in effect during construction
– Construction to be completed fall 2019
