I’d say you either own or work at Canadian Tire. Another point on the weekly sale is…. for example.. Master Craft angle grinder.. sometimes (I’d guess 60% of the time) the price is $59.99…. but sometimes(I’d guess 40% of the time) it’s on sale for $19.99. So you see it in the flyer for $19.99 and you think wow…thats a low price.. but if you have a memory you realize it’s that $19.99 price 5 months of the year and the other 7 months of the year it’s over priced. There’s countless products like that.. Having the customer service counter being the only till open is not good customer service. Maybe if people wern’t always returning the stuff that broke on them the line up wouldn’t be so long. The point of Canadian Tire buying all there stuff from China isn’t a dig at foreign trade… it’s a dig at the quality of product they’re selling… one of the reasons China can sell so cheap is because , generally it’s a low quality product. I find it kind of a weird first post… come out swinging…name calling… you sound so offended… When you say the brands they sell are just as good as anything on the market… your not refering to BIKES are you.. or tools… or tires

Funny hearing Casey Brennan getting interupted by a coal train blowing its horn, downtown Fernie, while stating his case to Global TV, on all the destruction BP is about to do with their Mist Mountain test drilling. Not in my backyard!! Strange how his "backyard" happens to be private land.

The problem is though, "the locals" as you call them… say its to risky in "my backyard", and the benefits recieved in "my backyard" will be out weighed by the risk. But do they still burn natural gas to heat their homes? Chances are yes… They are willing to "risk"somebody elses backyard so they can heat their homes but not willing to risk their own backyard to heat their homes. It’s the old, protect one area, and destroy another. They’re trading spotted owls for Jaguars.

Everybody complaind when gas was $1.50/liter… how much are you willing to pay? $3.00/liter? $4.00/liter? What are you willing to risk to pay $1.00/liter? Are you going to stop driving, sledding, dirt biking? Are you going to stop truck shuttles? Mowing the lawn? Cat skiing? Are you willing to send Canadian soldiers to the Middle East to be able to do truck shuttles up Three Kings? Are you willing to let them dig sand out of the prairies so you can run your boat on Lake Koocanusa? Are you willing to accept the risk of off shore oil to be able to mow the greens of the new golf course? If you are………………………………………….Who are you trusting??

gagbandit, I assumed (I can see I was wrong) you would be able to handle a little sarcasm. My point wasn’t to bash Calgarians, I was trying to show how stupid your post was! By saying we should ban dogs because of a few poopers, is as stupid as saying we should ban Calgarians because of a few litter bugs. After reading your last post, I come to realize you might be on edge. Nice rant though! LOL. Calm down and go clean up that dog poop on your lawn, and I’ll go clean up the garbage your friends left. Next time I post, I dumb it down for you. I wouldn’t want you to have an anurism debating yourself to death. Good times though…. I guess thats why you come "to the country" though… to mellow out from the city… you don’t seem very mellow though.. I appologize for your confusion… You can blame me for your stupidity though… I wasn’t very clear… So here you go, I’ll say it dumb downed for you,

Geez gagbandit, I don’t think we should ban dogs because a few dog owners aren’t picking up their dogs poop. I think it would be better to shame them into cleaning it up, so the rest of the responsible dog owners can keep owning dogs. We shouldn’t let a few wreck it for the many.. Don’t you agree?

    there… you get it now?

I see Calgarians come to Fernie, sit in the McDonalds parking lot, open there car door and start unloading garbage onto the concrete. I see Calgarians filling up with gas at 7-11, open their car doors and unload garbage right onto the concrete parking lot. I’m riding my bike down the highway, and someone with Albertian plates (assuming Calgarian) throws a mostly drank slurpy drink right out her window, directed at my head, laughing. Lets ban Calgarians! I know some people have suggested this in jest, but seriously, why don’t we ban Calgarians???

Ryland said: "Why do we have to grow or de-grow. Why cant we figure out how to prosper with what we have before us"
Ryland said " Im with you earth1st. lets embrace our de-growthing and plan to adapt to a smaller (perhaps more sustainable?) population."

Very interesting contradictions….. Whats the point of growing tourism if nobodies around to bennefit from it?

I was just a kid when the mines shut down in the early ’90’s and it was horrible. 50 year olds forced to go tree planting, forced to go on "U.I", the housing market crashed and people that owed $50,000 for a house that was now worth $30,000 simply walked away leaving the houses emty. I was a scary time. Thats not what I call sustainable de-growth. Its what i’d call horrible de-growth. And lets hope the town doesn’t have to go through that again.

I remember the summer of ’98 Fernie got this crazy bylaw officer, she’d go up town and if she even saw you dog tied up outside a store unattended, she’d untie it and haul it off to he pound. It was a crack down on loose and unattended dogs. Now, the laws only as good as it’s it forced, which is zilch. Bylaw officer is a thankless job though.

As an added point, its actually up stream of ski hill effluent. Not that it makes a difference to the water source. I always pegged you as a bottle water kinda guy Ryland.

Don’t worry Ryland I pay utilities here in west fernie which includes water usage on my bill. So we’re not using it for free. We’re paying for it. Number 2, do you know what an aquifer is? If not you should research it. It’s not coming out of the elk river, it’s coming from an aquifer beside and way under the elk river. Take a breath, calm down….. Breath….. We can get though this. Calm….

mtnrat, I remember hearing about that outbreak, and my understanding is that Heiko had cows that he kept on the mountain to keep the grass down on the runs. Well they ended up sh!ting in the water supply, which was by the zig-zag fence at the enterance to Phat Larrys bike trail. Which I think is closed now. That water source is oldschool for sure.. and no more cows thank god.. There’s an old story about the old maintenance crew "scooping" up a cow while running the boom chair doing summer maintenance without knowing it. Sounded like it didn’t make it to far past tower 1 though. MOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

mtnrat, your wrong about the ski hill collecting surface runoff and collecting it in an underground resevoir. During the "on season" most of the potable water it brought from an aquifer located at the Elk River. From the little building on the other side of the locked gate, pretty much at the bottom of the hill… you probally know where I mean. During the "off season" most of the potable water is gathered from springs located on the ski hill, and moved through the little hut on the lizard run, to add chlorine, then stored in two underground resevoirs, creating the large lizard jump right beside the little hut, and is still supplemented by the River Aquifer with the "river pump". There would never be enough surface runoff to supply the hill all summer long, never mind all winter long, when there is no surface runoff… The bears den water use to be run off… 7 years ago.. but now its t’d off of the snow making line, non treated… don’t drink it.
