Jude,
I share your pain, as I went through the same issue last year.
The Fernie Alpine Ski Team has a very good club. http://www.ferniealpineskiteam.ca/
The club has launched some awesome skiers, most noteably Olympian and World Cup victors Emily Brydon and Nancy Green. They seem to work with all ski levels, and it might make sense for your long stay.
I hope this works for you.

czar from afarParticipantAre things really this bad?
I am a frequent visitor, and I hope to move my family to Fernie. I have heard occassional stories about locals taking out thier frustrations on people who are new to the town, but I have never experienced it. This thread has me wondering if I would be putting my wife and kids in danger by moving to Fernie.
Are there common targets (i.e. Calgarians, Australians, ethnicities, religions, old guys, young guys, etc.)?
What type of locals cause the problems, and what are they so frustrated about?
czar from afarParticipantAlso, there is a free evening shuttle between FAR and the Town, but you will likely be far happier staying in Town.
As for renting a car, the parking at the hill is pretty good, compared to most other places, and parking in Town is largely a non-issue.
Regarding the ski shops, there are 3-4 very good ones – you will have no problem finding what you need, and the selection is well suited to the area conditions.
czar from afarParticipantDon’t be too concerned about the accomodations. You will be able to find a great place if you start looking by Sept or so.
However, you really should get there for late summer, if you can. The hiking, biking and river sports are exceptional. This is a legitimate wilderness landscape, and it is well worth seeing in the summer.
Enjoy.
czar from afarParticipantAnyone?
czar from afarParticipantI must say that accomodation demands seem to be a little higher this year compared to prior years.
However, I am sure that you would be able to find a room rental. There are some public posting locations in town which may help you out (e.g. at Overweightee and outside the Post Office). A local might want to comment here on how useful these postings are for rentals.
Enjoy.
