Wildsight Elk Valley introduces its new and improved “Feed the Need” campaign, an innovative monthly donation program dedicated to strengthening food security in the Elk Valley.
According to Food Banks BC, food bank visits have increased 81% since 2019, and 31% of all food bank users are children.
Feed the Need donations will directly benefit two essential initiatives:
1. Local Store Gift Cards: In partnership with the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre, Local will provide gift cards to community members needing food assistance, giving them access to fresh, locally sourced groceries.
2. Evergreens Farm Food Bank Donations: Monthly contributions to Feed the Need will also support Evergreens Farm’s year-round donations of fresh produce to the food bank, expanding access to nutritious, Fernie-grown greens for those in need.
This initiative uniquely strengthens the local food system by increasing access for those in need while empowering local food producers to share their harvest. It fosters sustainability, supports local agriculture, and ensures fresh, nutritious food is available to the community year-round.
“The response from families has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s truly wonderful to offer support that is both low-barrier and practical, helping families access fresh, locally sourced food while easing financial stress. Feed the Need is making a real difference in our community. The joy and relief we see in participants when they pick up their cards – this program is about more than food—it’s about supporting dignity, well-being, and community resilience” says Layne Leskosek, Outreach and SAS Coordinator for the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre.
Feed the Need first launched in December 2023 at Local, and over $7,200 was raised in the first year.
“We’re excited to take our monthly subscription program in a new direction to make a meaningful difference for those experiencing food insecurity,” says Sami Bierman, Wildsight Elk Valley’s Branch Administrator. “By supporting Feed the Need, community members will directly help to expand food access and sustain our local food network.”
The Feed the Need program reflects Wildsight Elk Valley’s commitment to cultivate a thriving, knowledgeable and resilient local food culture.
