The RDEK Board of Directors has taken a significant step forward in updating the Elk Valley Official Community Plan (OCP) by sharing the initial survey results, which provide a snapshot of community perspectives on growth and development over the next 15 to 20 years. As the OCP guides the region’s vision to 2045, the feedback gathered is essential for shaping policies that reflect Elk Valley’s unique values, aspirations, and environmental priorities.
The initial survey, which closed on August 31, gathered input from residents across Elk Valley, covering topics such as land use, infrastructure, housing, and sustainability. These survey results are the first building blocks in the OCP process, setting a foundation upon which the community, stakeholders, and First Nations can build a shared vision for future development. For those interested in the specifics, the survey summary is available here, offering insights into residents’ primary concerns and hopes for Elk Valley.
While this survey was the first stage, the planning process has much ground to cover. Over the next 18-24 months, the RDEK will roll out additional engagement opportunities, inviting residents to participate through more surveys, in-person discussions, issue-specific sessions, and reviews of the draft OCP. The commitment to broad community input aims to ensure the final plan is both comprehensive and representative of the region’s diverse perspectives.
To keep residents in the loop, the RDEK has established a project page as a central hub for updates and announcements related to the OCP process. By subscribing to RDEK’s Elk Valley email group, residents can stay informed about upcoming engagement opportunities and plan milestones.
The next major discussion on the OCP will take place at the Area A Town Hall Meeting on Monday, November 4, 2024, at 7:00 pm in the Trinity Room at the Best Western in Fernie. This event is an important opportunity for residents to hear about survey results, next steps, and engage directly with RDEK representatives.
As Elk Valley embarks on this multi-year planning journey, the RDEK encourages everyone to stay connected and engaged. The Elk Valley OCP is more than a planning document—it’s a community-driven blueprint for a thriving, sustainable future.
