Significant Snowfall

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Significant Snowfall in Fernie.

The significant snowfall will arrive on Thursday morning to late evening in the Elk Valley (Especially near Fernie). This snowfall is arriving following a spring warm spell that lasted a week.

Significant spring snowfalls are common in Fernie and powder skiers are waxing their boards in anticipation of this snowfall!

A low pressure system, combined with the cold front from the Prairies, will generate a significant amount of snow over the Elk Valley on Thursday. The snow is expected to start on Thursday morning, intensifying throughout the day, and then tapering off in the late evening hours. Total snowfall accumulations of 10 to 15 cm are possible with localized higher amounts near Fernie.

The Elk Valley needs snowfall as the current snowpack at Morrissey Ridge is well below average.
