This week, outdoor activities are center focus at several long weekend events.

1. Fernie Alpine Resort Opening Day

This Saturday, the resort is opening for its wide range of summer activities. Both the Elk and Timber Chair provide access for downhill mountain biking and summer hiking. With one of the largest lift accessed trail networks in Western Canada, bike trails range from wide beginner tracks to steep and technical trails for the more advanced. For another adrenaline rush, try out the aerial park or the rippin’ zipline. Also, a reminder that Saturday is the last day to purchase your early bird winter season pass at the lowest rate available.

Community – Fernie Trails Alliance

Fernie Trails Alliance has a mission of working with outdoor groups, government and private land owners to enhance and maintain the Fernie trail network. Now, at the beginning of the bike season, is a crucial time for trail upkeep. FTA is presenting the Role and Sole Festival this weekend and will also be receiving funds through the Fernie 3. Some of the 2014 projects include a new Mount Proctor trail, uprooted stump removal, deadfall downhill work and reparations to several trails such as Lazy Lizard, S-bomb and Brokeback. Membership contributes directly to hire a trail crew in summer and grooming costs of Nordic trails in the winter.
