Fernie is mourning the loss of 17-year-old musical talent Nell Smith, who was tragically killed in a car accident this past Saturday. Nell, a rising star who had collaborated with Grammy Award-winning band The Flaming Lips, was working on new music and preparing for the release of her debut solo album.

Her devastated parents shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, describing their immense grief: “We are reeling from the news and don’t know what to do or say. She had so much more to experience and to give this world, but we are grateful for the incredible life she lived in her 17 years. She has left an indelible mark on the world and an unfillable chasm in our hearts.”

Wayne Coyne, lead vocalist of The Flaming Lips, acknowledged her death during a concert on Sunday, and the co-founder of Smith’s record label, Bella Union, also paid tribute to the young artist. Nell had been preparing to release her first solo album in early 2025, following the success of her 2021 album, Where The Viaduct Looms, a collaboration with The Flaming Lips covering Nick Cave songs.

Nell’s musical journey began at just 10 years old when she first saw The Flaming Lips in concert. Her passion and talent led to her eventually recording music with the band, leaving an impact that will be remembered by many.

Her family ended their message with a poignant reminder: “Hold your kids extra tight tonight and for now please leave us to work through things. We will shout when we need you.”

The community is in shock and mourning the loss of such a vibrant and talented young soul.
