Fernie Fat Bike Day was a huge success with hundreds of riders participating in full costume and the trails are riding hard and fast! The Fernie Mountain Bike Club organized the event to celebrate the local popularity of Fernie fat biking by riding fat bikes on our wonderfully groomed trails!

Fat bikers safely rode in their bubbles/cohorts or individually with respect for our communities health and the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.

There were great prizes for; Best Dressed Fat biker, Youngest Fat biker, Oldest Fat biker, Most KMs ridden on Fernie Fatbike Day, Most Enthusiastic Fernie Fat biker, Best Decorated Fat bike, Fernie Fat bike Family, and the Best Matched Fat bike Couple. Here are some of the posted photos and you can see that this truly was a fabulous and fantastic celebration!

One award of special mention is Andy Ward’s most KM’s ride. Andy celebrated Fernie Fat Bike day by riding 100km on our packed trails network!

Here is Andy’s comment on the ride, “Was a amazing day filled with Highs and Lows, figuratively and metaphorical. Thanks to the Fernie Gravel Grinds I got a taste and experience for long distance biking, and Inspired by the organizater & Top Gun Fernie Legends: Cater Nieuwesteeg and his incredible 100mile ride in the summer. I came up with a route that would see me traverse Fernie Winter Trail Map and for-fill a goal to ride 100km on my Fatbike. I experienced a few set backs, and found the strength to continue with the small words of encouragement from my amazing Wife. I cried as a reached home as this is an achievement and day I hope to remember for the rest of my life. Without my Family and Bikes I don’t know how I would have made it through this year.”

Here is Andy’s ride on Strava, note his ride title “Hardest Day On a Bike Ever” – well done Andy!

If you’re new to fat biking you can find all the trail updates and rider news on the Fernie Fat Bike Facebook group. You can also pick up a copy of Fernie’s new free Winter Trails at a local retailer.

A Winter Trails Collaborative Project organized the launch of a new 2020-2021 Fernie Winter Trail Map. View the map online here.

Fernie fat bikers started the current grooming program several years ago with the FMBC and lately it has grow substantially. This year Tourism Fernie got involved and secured tourism funding to help with the initiative, read the details here.

Happy fat biking and thanks to the organizers at the FMBC!
