Avalanche Canada recommends 5 Good Travel Habits for traveling safely in the backcountry. They posted, “If you’re heading into the backcountry this long weekend, be sure to use good travel habits.”

This message comes only days after the Kicking Horse incident took BC’s 2023 Avalanche death toll to nine. This toll ties the 2020-2021 season as the deadliest in the last seven years. Avalanche Canada attributes this to the interiors snowpack being “incredibly complex and difficult to manage.”

They advise that all backcountry users always consider the possibility of large avalanches happening and widening your margin for error at all times. These tips are mandatory and should be considered the rules of safe avalanche terrain travel:
