Fernie high water awareness is being urged as the Elk Valley prepares for a significant multi-day storm, with already high river levels, warm temperatures and forecast rainfall creating the potential for localized flooding.
Residents in flood-prone areas are being encouraged to take steps now to protect their properties and stay informed as conditions can change quickly along rivers, creeks and low-lying areas.
The BC River Forecast Centre has issued a Flood Watch for the East Kootenay. A Flood Watch means river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull, and flooding of areas near affected rivers may occur.
Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting heavy rainfall through the early part of next week. While rainfall modelling remains variable, totals could reach 40 to 80 mm across parts of the East Kootenay, with the potential for higher amounts in the Elk Valley.
Self-fill sandbag stations have been set up for residents who may be concerned about localized flooding.
In the Elk Valley, sandbags are available at:
Fernie: Railway Avenue, next to the City of Fernie operations facility.
Hosmer: Elk River Inn parking lot, Highway 3 at 6th Avenue.
The stations have sand and bags available, but residents must bring their own shovels.
The Regional Emergency Operations Centre has been activated to support any regional response and is in regular contact with the BC River Forecast Centre.
Residents are reminded to use extreme caution around all waterways. Fast-moving water, unstable banks and rising river levels can create dangerous conditions with little warning. People should avoid walking near riverbanks, keep children and pets away from waterways, and never drive through flooded roads.
Residents should continue to monitor official updates from the BC River Forecast Centre.
