The Monster Enemy Lines became a waiting game with the rain and the disintegration of the snow pack in the upper elevations of Fernie Alpine Resort. After two days of above freezing levels and the incoming front carrying rain, heavy at times, the course inspectors and Fernie Ski Patrol decided the original course off the Lizard Headwall would be too dangerous.
As a compromise they are starting the Monster Energy Enemy Lines Chinese Downhill below the Lizard Headwall off the upper Lizard bowl traverse. This is nothing less than a blue run to the legendary Griz bar.
The format is no longer a winner-takes-all, but modified to reflect the lesser “blue run” difficulty. Top prize will be $5,000 and the remainder of the $15,000 will be distributed among the rest of the competitors. The start will be Saturday at 4:30.
The re-worked competition awards everyone who made the effort to make the trek to Fernie.
The intent remains to hold the original Monster Enemy Lines, but not this year. Easter weekend would have been perfect or possibly next weekend. Perhaps the Griz didn’t approve of the new Monster…
