The Fix is a platform for discussion, it’s a “news magazine”. I say write what you feel! Be honest, people will be interested in hearing about what you have to say especially if it’s something that they too agree with or have experience with.

I grew up in Fernie and remember a time when there were two restaurants on main street (aka 2nd ave), Ginger Beef and JV’s Pantry. Things have changed and will continue to do so. An effective DMO ensures that any changes work towards helping local businesses. A coalition lessons the threat of the big box organizations moving in, and when/if they do move in, local businesses will be in a more secure situation. We need to stick together and help keep the local shops and services that make Fernie such a unique destination in business.

Getting people here essential, but before we start the mass marketing we should take a look around and make sure we provide an aesthetically pleasing destination that offers all amenities. A conscious effort needs to be made to increase the services we offer in town and at the ski hill, keep businesses open on 2nd avenue, repair roads, etc. Sure, we can get people here once, but it is the repeat visitor that adds value in the end.

Easy…helping your community successfully pull off an event that has had and will continue to have substantial economic effects on the valley. I’m sure there are tangible rewards as well, but you would hope being part of such a huge, transcontinental event is enough.

The Market starts July long weekend and goes until Labor Day long weekend. It is currently held at Rotary Park which is located along the highway.

I would contact Matt or Colin of the Brickhouse/Phat City. Both have been in various local bands and book bands to play at these establishments on a weekly basis. Phat City offers a great setting for a video with its funky/industrial decor. http://www.thebrickhousefernie.ca, 423-0009

I think there are benefits to both public and private systems, and either way you go in Fernie you will receive good teaching and education for your child. Both the public and private schools are being reinvigorated with young, enthusiastic instructors that can offer a lot. When it comes down to it, what it takes is being very involved in your childs education and development.

Carosella, Bunches, and Ghostrider Trading are all great local places to buy jewelry, kitchen ware, candle holders, picture frames etc. They are all situated along Victoria Avenue (2nd Ave, Main Street). Polar Peak Book Store is also on this street and offers a great selection of books as well as cards, journals and the like. Board Stiff, The Guides Hut, Straight Line and The Ski Base are all on or near 2nd ave and offer a huge selection of sporting goods and apparal. Ghostrider Trading, Hempire, Odyssey and Valley Family Footwear on 2nd Ave all offer apparell and foot wear.

I would say for a small town that Fernie has some good shopping options!

Nate, are you looking at opening up a new and used record store in town? Hmm. I think it would definitely be risky, but what new and small business in Fernie isn’t? On the one hand you have a lot of DJ’s in town that are always looking for new music, on the other hand the world is moving towards electronic everything. Also your inventory might take awhile to build up. It would be a great addition to the local businesses in town though….

I’m not sure if I answered your question or not….good luck either way.

If you’re an early bird you can watch the first part of the combined (the downhill) live at 4:30am on CBC tomorrow. If not you can still catch the 2nd race of the two slalom races at noon live on CBC. They’re ranked after all three races…..Emily won a bronze in this event last year at this course! Let’s send her all the positive energy we can round up!
