New and used music? I don’t think it stands a chance. But I think you’re on to something. I know that in the past second hand shops have stood the test of time in Fernie. Perhaps, I think, used music along with other things, such as used books and videos even….all sorts of used entertainment and you’d be in good shape. Alot of the people who come here are on a budget and prefer to spend small amounts of money to keep entertained while they aren’t skiing.
The thing with music is that its so easy to get it all for free these days. I haven’t bought a CD since I was 15. But if I was wandering around a store such as this and seen “Dance Mix 93” and it was only 4 or 5 bucks, I would buy it. And I also hate paying $30 for a book when I could get someones old copy for like $5. Just some thoughts for ya….

Its always great to make the headline :-p
Well Nate, I’m thinkin your mom is alittle too old for me, although I’m sure shes the bomb!
And in the good spirit of things, heres the situation on the Gavitron:
I’m totally single, afraid to get in a relationship. To be honest, it actually feels more like I don’t want to have a relationship. I think cuz in the past I couldn’t figure out how to handle one and totally screwed them up. Off to a good start here. I’m a born and raised Fernie kid, been here through it all. I used to hate it, but as I’ve gotten older (pushin 23) I’ve started to notice the relaxed way of life and kind of appreciate it now. I manage a business in town, which takes up most of my time. And for all of those worried about small business in town, it is doable, but it takes a hell of a lot of work, more than it probably should. When I do have time off, I go snowmobiling or fishing and sometimes take a road trip. All of which I do alone more often than not. Fernie is the kind of place where people come to have a great time, go crazy, blow money, than head home at the end of the season, making it extremly difficult to find someone that just wants to settle in and enjoy life. At one point in life I drank and did drugs, that all ended when I got out of highschool and wasn’t worried about being cool anymore. I own my own place (its a trailer) because its cheaper than renting in this town that is apparently made of gold. I want a family with a house and a white picket fence.
I’ll stop now because as some of you know, I tend to get carried away typing posts.
For a free ticket to ride the Gavitron call 250-423-8797 (I can’t believe I just typed that in a public forum) or email gavinthomas@shaw.ca
Or if you just wanna have lunch or whatever, thats cool too!

I know nothing about golf, and I have lived in Fernie my whole life and never actually played a round of golf here. I do know that at some point we used to brag about our golf course, and now I never here much about it. This guy is not a moron, he is a guy with a passion for golf and fond memories of a course that he once thought was great, granted he does sound quite bitter. This reminds me of the mogul smoker thread, except this time instead of everybody being against the change, we’re all saying that its a good thing. So, as I said, I have no idea what I’m talking about, but if they aren’t letting kids play golf, I think they should let them, and even go out of their way to encourage young players. Lets not forget Tiger Woods y’all.
And incase anyone needs my name to somehow make my opinion on here legite, the names Gavin Thomas, and yes ladies, I’m available ;-)

As far as marijuana use goes and the idea that no one loses friends to the stuff, I have to disagree. There are people I know from highschool that I was once good friends with that I have had to distance myself from because all they do these days is work and rush home to smoke a joint. They scrounge for money to buy some more, rush to cash their paycheck so they can stock up and beg their landlord for an extension on rent because they have no money. The majority of these people make twice as much money as myself. I know all the money isn’t going towards pot, some of it goes to all the fast food they buy once they get the munchies. So there they are, sitting on the couch, staring at the tv, giggling and waiting to fall asleep so they can get up, go to work, and do it all over again. I’m not saying this is unappropriate behavior, just sort of seems like a waste of life to me. They have lost all their energy and ambition in life, and it doesn’t matter to them, because all they want to do is get high and chill. And they have infact made more friends, people who share this lifestyle. I am not saying this is true with every person that smokes marijuana, just pointing out that it can infact have negative impacts on peoples lives. I know a couple who become so aggitated when they run out of marijuana that they beat their children with belts and hockey sticks for unjustified reasons, if there even is a reason for that sort of punishment.
I have a beer every now and then, maybe a couple, maybe a few too many, but not regularly enough to give it much of a second thought, and I know that some people smoke a joint every now and then and go about leading a decent life the majority of the time, and I see no issues with that. If alcohol became prohibited, I would be ok with never being able to have a beer again, because I know that it can have a powerful affect on peoples lives and we would be better off as a society. I like to think that marijuana users think the same, but as alcohol has its alcoholics, marijuana definitly has its chronics.
I like to think that the problem with substance abuse comes from somewhere deeper. As a society, we’re very depentant people. We know if we don’t make enough money, the tax payers will cover us. Some of us have parents who will bail us out of any situation instead of letting us learn our lessons. We know that if we become a single parent, we can have guaranteed child support for 18 years. We know that if we complain long enough, someone will feel sorry for us and bail us out. I find alot of substance abusers always complaining but never taking action, just taking what they can from the people who put in the effort. Again, I am talking about those who have lost control, not the occasional participant.
Ban alcohol, it is terrible. That doesn’t make marijuana any better.
And as for politics, I’m all for the cuts in medical, the cuts in education, cut all the damn expenses. People get drunk, fall down stairs, hurt themselves, go to the emergency room and use up tax dollars. Kids go to school and get high behind the dumpster because they’re mad that they are being forced to learn things that do not interest them or that have no relavance to real life. We need hospitals that can provide the essentials. We don’t need them so people can have peace of mind about doing stupid, irrational things. The emergency room is open, they’ll save me if drink too much, if I decide to drive like an idiot, if I pick a fight with a guy who is obviously going to rearrange my face. I’m not interested in paying taxes to support that, so that these people can have high-paid sympathy and support. How many old people stay for months on end in hospitals, hooked on some sort of life support? I’m sure we would all like to live forever, but the truth is that you are going to die, you should accept that and die when you are supposed to, not when your family gets sick of visiting your mindless, barely functioning body and decides to pull the plug. I do not mean to sound harsh or coldhearted, but lets try our best to stay in touch with reality. Lets tough it out, live with out our safety nets for awhile. If we can survive for a few years (and we can) without all our luxuries, the worst that can happen is our taxes will be lowered and we will all get to keep what we work for and live on our own terms. Hell, maybe the government will even give us MORE money. I encourage you all to look at the past 15 years of Albertas political history. They have more money than they can spend. And it just may be because they tolerated a few expense cuts so that they can now have that much more control over their own lives.
Incase anyone is curious, I do not vote. I believe we all have what it takes to make proper decisions in our own lives. The idea of a government is great as far as having someone to organize development, but do we really need them to tell us if we can smoke dope? If we can drink beer? How fast we can drive? How old we need to be before we can have sex? How hard you’re allowed to hit a child? What we need to learn, when we need to learn it? How much money we can earn before we have to give some of it to someone whos too lazy to work for what they want? How long grandma can stay plugged-in before she over-stays her welcome? I’m not going to vote in a parent to lead my adult life for me, I’m comfortable making my own decisions, living my life the way I want it to be.

First of all, I got no issues with stoners, most of them are quite funny….or annoying, depending on the extent of their consumption. I can’t say I know much about purchasing marijuana because I never have, but I know tons of people that do and they don’t seem to have any problems getting their fix. I also don’t know anyone who has had any legal problems serious enough to affect the quality of their lives just because a cop busted them smoking dope. I suppose it would be nice for you guys to be able to go to 7-11 and pick up some joints or to sit on main street where everyone can see you get high, but is it really that big of deal to have to smoke up in your own house or car and than go out in public? This should not be a major deciding factor when choosing a leader for your country. If smoking pot is all you care about so much so that you determine who controls all of your tax money simply because they let you get high, than perhaps smoking pot DOES have a serious affect on those who partake in it.

Sorry to hear you got beat up, it happens to the best of em. I hope you’re alright.
I would however ask that you refrain from giving the implication that it happened because you were in Fernie. It didn’t happen because you were in Fernie, it happened because someone or some people wanted to kick your ass. I understand your urge to justify what happened to you and to find a source to put the blame. The people that did it are to blame. They did it because they enjoy doing it. They chose you either because you did something to offend them or you just plain and simple were in the wrong place at the wrong time. If you would like something done about it, it is up to you. The police aren’t going to magically solve all your problems for you, they can however help you bring your attackers to justice. So instead of complaining about the fact that these people were in Fernie, help out the rest of us and use your experience to make this place a little bit safer.

“Now if you do the math, together they paid $30, got $3 back meaning they only paid $27. The waitress kept $2. This totals $29. Where did the last dollar go?”

    – Thats right, they PAID $27 ($25 for steaks, $2 for tip) and still have $3 of the original $30

They had $30. $25 went to steaks, $2 went for tip, thats the $27 they spent (note: the tip is already accounted for). They still have $3, $27 (spent) plus $3 (kept) equals $30.

The problem is that people don’t think of the tip as part of the money spent because of the sentence “The waitress kept $2” which triggers the assumption that it is not yet accounted for. Then they strengthen your assumption by agreeing with you “This totals $29”.

Here it is with subtraction (correctly):
    Total amount-steaks-tip=money left over
    $30 – $25 – 2 = 3

Its a play on words that I’ve tried to explain to people many a time, the original statement is falsely stated, deal with it :-)

What really happened: Together they paid $30, but their total expense was $27. So $3 was returned to them. This totals $30. No problem.

I’ve thought about this for soooooo long, like, years. And the more time that goes by, the fewer ideas I come up with. I am at the point now where I would actually be too scared to try a business in Fernie. I don’t have any real statistics, but it seems the average business life in Fernie is no more than 4 years. Of course there are a few that have survived the test of time (most franchises, the chinese food restaurants, anything to do with trades, the ski hill etc.), and a couple new businesses (Giv’er, Board Stiff, that girly gift store, Fernie Brewing Co.) that look promising, but they are few and far between. (I know theres more, no offence if I didn’t mention you:-) )
Nightlife in Fernie sucks, but due to seasonal business trends, I wouldn’t know what to do about that.
There is no where to buy decent clothing or electronics, but people have tried and I’m quite sure our small year-round population put a stop to those businesses.
I always thought an outfitters would do well, somewhere that sells hunting gear, camping equipment etc. but I have seen those come and go also.
Arcade? Nope, they drop like flys.
    Petting Zoo? YEAA!!!!! …no.
All You Can Eat Pizza Buffet??? Well I guess if it could make enough cash, but it would definetly be abused!
Toy Store? Hobby Shop? Novelty Store?
What about services? I hear Fernie Mow N’ Snow is off to a good start. Residential Cleaning Service? That’d be something I would pay for if it was affordable enough! Although I would feel sorry for whoever had to organize this mess, but would leave good tips :-)
I could go off forever, but I’ll leave it at this for now.

I was listening to some people discuss the topic of Christmas being a celebration of the birth of Christ, and how some people are trying to make everything about Christmas politically correct and a comparison came to mind.
My birthday is October 4th. On that day, people who care about me get together and celebrate my birth. People who don’t know me or care about me don’t do anything out of the ordinary. However, if people DID get together and buy other people presents and wished other people a happy birthday just for the sake of being friendly, it would not offend me. I would be content with the few people that were celebrating my birth and not worry about other peoples motives that day as long as they were in good spirits and were letting other people in their lives know they cared about them.
So, as for Jesus Christ, I guess the question is: Would Jesus care that other people use December 25th, which is used to celebrate his birth by his followers, to celebrate their own lives and the lives of those they love and care for?
I don’t think he would mind. If October 4th became known as Gavitronmas and everyone celebrated and spent time with their family with out even knowing who I was or caring about my life, I would be happy just knowing that on that day everyone was sharing the love.
I do however have to agree that if people do not think it is right to celebrate Christmas because it has different meanings to different people, than instead of changing a Christmas tree into a “Holiday Tree” perhaps a new day of celebration should be created…and just to get the ball rolling, Gavitronmas on October 4th sounds great!

When I got off work, I basically needed a chisel to get into my car because it was coated with a layer of ice thanks to the snow that has turned into freezing rain. Although I also must say, it beats -20 and lower :-)

As far as throwing big parties goes, props to Mark and Jen. Although I stuck to my guns and didn’t attend, I couldn’t help but do a drive-by to see how things turned out. I have talked to people who attended the party and they seemed to have had a great time. Congrats on the turn out!
As for your neighbours, you are very fortunate to have them as I am sure they tolerated all sorts of chaos.
My hope is that one day I will be able to attend the traditional mogul smoker once again. And for the record, its not snowing.
