It has been my experience that snow blades are fun toys to play on fun hills with. Fernie is a mountain. You’ll have fun messing around on the bottom runs where the snow is packed down but if you want to experience the whole mountain you probably won’t enjoy it. One of our buddies used to insist on snowblading when he came with us and we CONSTANTLY had to wait for him when we were up high because he would just sink in the snow and be digging himself out every 50 feet. When he did manage to stay on top of the snow his maximum speed was not speed at all. I guess if everyone you are with is snowblading you might have a good time, but if you’re going with boarders or skiers, do them a favor and skip the blades.

    Moke, you say:
Yeah fernie has it’s little problems, but hot damn if this place isnt as close to paradise as one can find..

what fernie has become, i challenge you to tell me where there is a better town to live..

whathasferniebecome is saying that he doesn’t want Fernie to change. You’re saying you’re ok with it. If Fernie changes, will it still be so close to paradise? If its that good the way it is, change really isn’t a good thing no?

    Anyways…
I hate rumours, so I try to find the truth whenever I can. To enlighten anyone who may be interested, I managed Domino’s for its last 2 and a half years. The decision to close the store was based solely on the lack of reliable workers in Fernie. Incase we haven’t noticed, people come here to ski and slack off. And there aren’t enough of us here that make this place our permanent home and try to bulid our financial stability to work all the businesses. I am greatful everyday for the few people that worked with me there that put in more hours and effort to keep it going as long as we could. It seems not a week goes by that I don’t have someone say to me “Gav what happened to Domino’s??? Now we have to order from that other place…” Turbo, one of Fernies older businesses, suffered the same fate. Its a choice business owners are being faced with, either close up shop, or give every penny to the employees so they will stay. We all have our own way of thinking, but for me there isn’t much point in owning a business if you don’t get to keep much for yourself.

Inside information says that WalMart has decided not to come in to Fernie, although they are entertaining the thought of putting one up outside of town closer to Sparwood. I know that sounds stupid on the outside, but if you put enough thought in to it it makes sense. As for other businesses coming, its kind of inevitable at this point don’t you think? Just sit back and watch it happen.

As far as I know there shouldn’t be any problems finding work as a plumber in Fernie with all the construction and renovations going on all over the place. As for photography, I don’t really know much about that scene. And it is definetly a safe bet that you can have fun in the mountains here :-)

I think a major factor that is impacting business in town yet seems entirely ignored is our population. As bigger stores come in, smaller stores are closing down. In normal cities, small businesses can function because there is enough local consumers to ensure that everyone gets a slice of the pie all year round. The way we market Fernie these days does not attract long term residents, which we need more of. Not only to spend money here, but to live here and work and spread the wealth. The tourism marketing is a start, but the more we do that the more expensive it gets to live here. Whos gonna run this town? I know of perfectly feasible businesses in town that have closed their doors only because they can not find employees that will stay for more than a month or two. Maybe we should worry about the basics before we get too crazy with the marketing. How about some affordable housing? I don’t know much about this DMO stuff, but by the sounds of it I don’t think the time is right to give our businesses another headache.

I’m not educated on the subject, but to me it seems like this could go either way. The rules say you can’t charge 1st and last month and security deposit. The guy renting the place out says if you wanna rent it then thats the deal. He’s not required to rent it out at all, thats his choice. So if someone takes him up on his deal I highly doubt they can agree to the terms, move in, then call up our babysitter (the government) and get their money back. Its like taking a job for $5 an hour, minimum wage is $8 an hour, but since you agreed to it prior to commencing work then its your own damn fault

I don’t have kids, so I can’t offer any direct opinion about the Academys service, but I have interacted with them and seen the kids that do attend. One thing that sticks out in my mind is when I walked into a classroom there was a bunch of children speaking french about as well as I did in grade 10, and these kids were about 10 years old. They all seem to enjoy being there (about as much as a kid can enjoy being at school anyways.) They all seem to be recieving excellent education and for the most part are polite, well behaved kids. I have also met a number of the ladies that teach there and they are all very nice people. I have also noticed that they spend a decent amount of time outdoors participating in all sorts of different activities and interacting with the community. As a kid that attended Fernies public schools, I would definetly consider the Academy before the public schools. My only concern would be when the kids had to move into a public school due to the Academy’s limited grade offerings that they would have a hard time adapting to the rougher, perhaps more negative environment.
