I don’t know if they are waiting to open Timber until the 12th, but frankly I’d be glad since maybe the snow coverage this year will be better…last year it opened at about the same time as the old side and the ski-outs were brutal.
December 12th is still relatively early season; Gives the locals a couple weeks before holiday madness anyway.
December 5, 2003 at 9:00 pm in reply to: Transport to Fernie from Calgary and up to the mountain #12973elsieParticipantThe cheapest shuttle to and from Calgary is available through Mountain Perks – I think it is about $111 return…check their website at mountainperks.ca
The other option is Greyhound but the times of departure etc. are horrible.
elsieParticipantDepends what you’re into…in terms of activities, we have x-country skiing, snoeshoing, cat-skiing, snowmobiling, ice skating, sleighrides, backcountry tours, etc etc. The aquatic centre here is awesome, you could check that out. There are great yoga/other classes around town to attend…nightlife is good in winter, with lots of pubs and a decent club you can dance at, a movie theatre with first-run films…great restaurants. I mean, really, really good restaurants, lots to choose from. There are several activity tour operators in town you could check out (many are listed on fernie.com). There’s quite a bit of shopping too…it’s a pretty broad question but hopefully this givesyou some idea.
elsieParticipantWhat’s great about Fernie is that it’s a mix of people from all kinds of backgrounds, it’s still really blue colour but at the same time, kind of cosmopolitan as people have chosen to live here for lifestyle reasons. I wouldn’t say it’s heavy on hippy at all. It’s pretty varied. In terms of politics etc., hey, it’s a small town — they are all like that! But I think people take it with a grain of salt.
Probably your best chance to experience Fernie would be to sit in any one of it’s coffee shops for a day; you’ll see all kinds of people from all walks of life come and go. It’s pretty cool.
elsieParticipantHey;
You can probably get around pretty well with the Kootenay Taxi ski shuttle, if you’re staying in a hotel they stop at all of them. Ease of transport depends on where you’re staying — on mountain or off?
On mountain means a cab ride to downtown for restaurants and bars, will run about $15. If you’re staying in town you can walk to most places, or take a cab ride which will generally run fairly cheaply.
Downtown hotels have ski shuttle service, it’s about $2 per one way ride I think.
Anyhoo. public transport should work.
elsieParticipantI think there’s a beer league type game on Monday nights. You could check with the Community Centre, or Fernie Leisure Services , at 423-4466.
elsieParticipantSounds good! Do you have to bare the butt to participate, or can you just give a donation and watch?
