Looks as though Fernie is locked for the coming 2011/12 winter. Im heading up from NZ and plan on getting there early October.
In typical kiwi fashion Im planning on rocking up and going with the flowing….

Im after any heads up’s, tips, local knowledge etc etc!
Ideal time to show up? Early Oct? Accomodation options/jobs..?
Super pumped for a proper Northern Hemi winter! Been in the works for a long time.

      Any info/yarns would be appreciated.

      Chur from NZ.

      Jonny.

The resort is just a 0.50 hour ride from the Cranbrook Airport that takes regular flights to Vancouver. At Fernie guests are provided with lodging options depending on the budget. Hotels and apartments however are situated near the slopes while the chalets are further down the mountain.

Fernie is a one hour ride from the Cranbrook airport.

The ski-hill has some ski-in ski-out however staying in town is recommended as all the services, entertainment, local culture and attractions are based in town. The drive from town to the ski-hill is only 5 minutes. :D

      Cheers for the replies.
Yeah will definitely being staying in the town and getting amongst the local vibes.
Anyone know if work is relatively easy to come by around mid October? also, anyone know when they are holding the Job Fair/Expo ‘s this year?

Work can be hard to come by, there’s a ski hill job fair and a town job fair, i think they’re both usually in October. There’s all the usual ski resort jobs – lifties, ticket sellers, hotel/restaurant staff. If you haven’t got experience doing any jobs like that before it can be pretty tough, it’s worth getting into town early to help secure a job. But it’s also a good idea to budget for the possibility of not getting a job.
If you don’t secure accomodation before you get here it’s a good idea to book a night or two in the raging elk hostel while you look for somewhere. Lots of people usually meet in the raging elk and end up renting places together.
Good call to stay in town rather than at the ski hill.

My previous WTF comment was aimed at skitrips missinformation about cranbrrok airport being 5 mins away! – It’s an hour.
