As the West Fernie Servicing & Restructure Project continues to move forward, the Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors has awarded the contract for construction of Phase 2 to Hazelwood Construction.
“This is another important step in the project,” says RDEK Electoral Area A Alternate Director, Dan Savage. “The project team, engineering consultants and our Phase 1 construction contractor Dawson Contracting have worked cooperatively to achieve good results so far. We look forward to welcoming Hazelwood Construction to West Fernie and working with them on the Phase 2 construction.”
Hazelwood is expected to mobilize in West Fernie later this spring and there will be an opportunity for the community to meet the new contractor prior to the start of construction.
“There will be a period of transition as we complete Phase 1 and begin construction on Phase 2,” explains RDEK Engineering Services Manager Brian Funke. “Dawson Construction will be back on site this spring to complete Phase 1 on the southeast side of Highway 3 and Hazelwood will be setting up at the same time to begin construction on Phase 2 on the southwest side. Our engineering consultant Kerr Wood Leidal / MPE will continue on throughout Phase 2, and will continue to have an on-site representative in West Fernie.”
The RDEK will be providing more detailed information to the community over the next few weeks and will be working with the contractors during the transition to ensure the project continues to move forward seamlessly.
