For over 30 years, Devon Canada Corporation has leased land to the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass for its community-run ski hill, Pass Powderkeg Ski Resort.

The company announced today it would be donating the land to the community as it continues to wind down operations in the area.

Devon acquired the land over 50 years ago and starting in 1979, the company leased it to the community for a nominal fee to create a community ski hill, which eventually became the Pass Powderkeg Ski Area of today that thousands of skiers and snowboarders enjoy annually.

Devon worked with the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass on an agreement that officially transfers the land to the Municipality.

“Last year, we had to make a tough decision to begin winding down operations in the area,” says Nadine Barber, Director Government and Public Affairs, Devon Canada Corporation. “While the community will still see and hear from Devon staff throughout the decommissioning process, we wanted to recognize and commemorate what this area and its people have meant to Devon.”

“We greatly appreciate the generous donation of this land from such a long time committed partner like Devon”, says Mayor Bruce Decoux. “This land strengthens our ability to move forward with the expansion and improvements that are planned for the ski hill. These improvements will help to anchor the other outdoor recreational pursuits that use this land base. Tourism and quality of life are key elements of our community strategic plan and this gift will help support that long term vision.”

Devon Canada Corporation will host a celebration in honour of the donation on Saturday, Feb. 2 with Devon’s Family Day celebration at Pass Powderkeg. The event is open to the entire community and includes discounted lift tickets, a free BBQ from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and prizes.
