Fernie’s favourite folk-pop unit Shred Kelly dropped their latest record Sing to the Night just last week, and to celebrate the release, here is the video premiere for the album’s title track.
The clip pays homage to a Fernie tradition — Hot Dog Day. The annual event sees locals decked out in retro ski gear, doing “hot doggin’ ’80s ski moves down the mountain.”
The band gave a bit of insight into the oddball ritual in the following statement:
It has been a legendary day in Fernie for years, and we wanted to capture some of that in the video. A woman in town rents out hot dog day outfits, so between her and other friends in town, we were able to get everyone suited up in some pretty snug fitting suits.
The video pretty much features everything that we love most, retro ski gear, ski jumping, hula hooping, and cheesy synchronized dance moves. There are so many hugely talented people in Fernie and we’re so fortunate that they all came together to make this video happen.
The video was shot in Fernie by local hot doggin’ videographer Dylan Siggers, who had to ski backwards, trying to capture the vision in one shot. “He is a wizard, though,” according to the band, “and pulled it off incredibly.”
