1. STAFF REPORTS
1.1 2018 Fuel Management Prescription Program Council has provided its support for the City of Fernie’s application to the 2018 Fuel Management Prescriptive Program (FMPP). This program is a part of the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI) which supports communities to mitigate risk from wildfire in wildland urban interface. The FMPP provides funding for the preparation of a document to identify objectives and strategies to lower the wildfire hazard in identified areas.
1.2 2018 FIRESMART GRANT PROGRAM Council has provided its support for the City of Fernie’s application to the 2018 FireSmart grant program. This program is part of the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI) which supports communities to mitigate risk from wildfire in wildland urban interface. The FireSmart program is designed to encourage self‐organized groups of residents to take the lead in implementing solutions for wildfire safety on their own properties.
1.3 Fernie municipal police unit agreement Council approved the Fernie Municipal Police Unit Agreement with the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General and authorized the Mayor to sign the agreement. In February of 2017, the City of Fernie was notified that it had passed the 5,000-population mark in the 2016 federal census. In passing this threshold, the City is required to pay for policing by either signing a Municipal Police Unit Agreement that appoints the RCMP as the city’s municipal police force, or by creating our own force.
2. BYLAWS
2.1 Bylaw No. 2339 Zoning Bylaw No. 1750, Amendment Bylaw No. 197, 2018 Council approved the application for Bylaw No.2339 and gave first and second readings of the bylaw. Bylaw No. 2339 proposes to rezone a 1407 square metre portion of their lot from R1 – Single Family Residential to R1B – Single Detached Plus Residential. At this time, the lot is partially zoned as R1 – Single Family Residential and P2 – Parks and Open Space. Rezoning the entire lot to R1 will match the current land use. The bylaw will be brought forward to a future meeting for a Public Hearing.
3. COUNCIL REPORTS
3.1 COUNCILLOR QUALIZZA Council authorized the City of Fernie to provide 50 family pool passes for the 2018 Bike to Work week. Councillor Qualizza will use the passes as prizes for youth participants.
