Fernie’s new Mayor and Council have officially been sworn in, marking the beginning of a four-year term that will guide the City of Fernie through November 2030.
Mayor Harshan Ramadass and six councillors took their oaths of office during the inaugural council meeting on November 3, 2026, at the Fernie Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre.
The newly elected Fernie City Council includes:
– Mayor Harshan Ramadass
– Councillor Kathleen Dolan
– Councillor Josh Gawryluk
– Councillor Phil Iddon
– Councillor Tracey Audia Kelly
– Councillor Ted Shoesmith
– Councillor Scott Tibballs
The inaugural meeting followed Fernie’s October 17 municipal election, which saw 2,797 of 5,072 eligible voters cast ballots, representing a voter turnout of approximately 55%.
In his inaugural address, Mayor Ramadass emphasized public safety, infrastructure renewal and greater community engagement.
Ramadass acknowledged the challenges facing Fernie, particularly aging wastewater infrastructure and the need to address longstanding municipal service issues.
The new council inherits several significant projects and priorities, including the City’s Official Community Plan update, housing and development pressures, infrastructure investment, municipal finances and the construction of Fernie’s new fire hall.
Over the coming weeks and months, council members will participate in a comprehensive orientation program, becoming familiar with City services, municipal operations, ongoing projects, governance processes and community initiatives.
Councillor Ted Shoesmith will serve as Deputy Mayor from November 2026 through May 2027, followed by Councillor Tracey Audia Kelly from June through December 2027.
Mayor Ramadass will represent Fernie on the Regional District of East Kootenay and Kootenay Regional Hospital District boards, with Councillor Audia Kelly serving as alternate.
The new council’s first regular meeting is scheduled for November 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Fernie Senior Citizens Drop-In Centre.
