Do you know an educator in the Columbia Basin who demonstrates excellence in environmental education? The Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN) has opened nominations for the 2023 Environmental Education Awards of Excellence.

This year, award categories include Indigenous Educator, Community Educator, Early Childhood Educator, Primary Teacher (K-3), Intermediate Teacher (4-7), Secondary Teacher (8-12) and Post-secondary Educator. Nominations are open online until May 31, and nominees must reside within the Canadian Columbia Basin region.

In 2022 Fernie resident Kathy Murray received an award of excellence for her dedicated work with Wildsafe BC education throughout the Elk Valley.

CBEEN’s Executive Director, Duncan Whittick, shares that “These awards allow us to showcase some of the most impactful and innovative educators in the province. In a culture where environmental education and place-based learning is being recognized as fundamental to supporting engaged and informed citizens, these awards help to shine a light on exemplars in education across a diversity of classrooms and communities.”

Award recipients will be presented with their awards at the Inquiring Voices Environmental Education Gathering for Educators October 19-21 at Blue Lake Camp near Canal Flats, BC.
