The Regional District of East Kootenay has launched a Vulnerable Persons Database to help emergency personnel identify residents who may require additional assistance during an evacuation.
The 2026 Vulnerable Persons Database is a free, voluntary and confidential service for East Kootenay residents who may face challenges during an emergency.
Residents are encouraged to register when circumstances such as the following could affect their ability to receive information or evacuate safely:
• Mobility issues
• Vision or hearing impairments
• Learning disabilities
• Mental health concerns
• Dependence on electricity for medical equipment
• Limited access to the internet or technology
• No access to a vehicle
People experiencing temporary vulnerability while recovering from surgery or an injury may also register.
Individuals receiving 24-hour professional care are not eligible for the database and should instead speak with their care provider about emergency planning.
“By registering ahead of time, residents who may need extra help due to mobility, medical needs, or other circumstances ensure emergency crews know where they are and what support they’ll need in advance,” said Regional Information Officer Loree Duczek.
“This registry helps emergency personnel plan for them before an emergency happens and will add a measure of extra protection to support our most vulnerable residents.”
Residents can register in one of two ways:
• Online through the RDEK Vulnerable Persons Database
• By calling 250-426-2188 or 1-855-346-2188
A current address and telephone number are required so emergency personnel can locate and contact registered residents during a critical situation.
In the event of an evacuation, emergency personnel will contact people listed in the database directly.
