Family Safety Day returns on May 9 with a larger, more coordinated approach to emergency preparedness, as City of Fernie and the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) join forces to grow the annual event.

Now aligned with Emergency Preparedness Week, the event reflects a practical focus for Elk Valley residents heading into spring, when wildfire, flood, and backcountry risks begin to rise.

“Family Safety Day has always been a strong, well-attended event built around collaboration with our regional partners,” said Scott Robinson, the City of Fernie’s Deputy Fire Chief and Emergency Program Coordinator. “Working with the RDEK this year builds on that success by bringing more knowledge, resources, and expertise together in one place for our community.”

The free, family-friendly event is designed to be hands-on and accessible, with interactive displays, emergency vehicles, information booths, and giveaways centered on personal preparedness. Local participation remains broad, including emergency services, Search and Rescue, FireSmart, BC Emergency Health Services, RCMP, and community organizations.

For residents, the value is straightforward: ask questions, understand local risks, and get set up before an emergency happens. Registration for the Regional Evacuation Notification system will also be available on site.

“From picking up information to checking out emergency apparatus or registering for alerts, there will be a lot to see and do,” said Christina Carbrey, RDEK Protective Services Manager. “This partnership helps strengthen awareness and preparedness across the Valley.”

Family Safety Day Fernie runs Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of Fernie City Hall.
