New Fernie voters will have an important opportunity to help shape the future of the community when Fernie goes to the polls in the 2026 General Local Election.
For residents voting for the first time, a municipal election can feel less prominent than a provincial or federal campaign, but the decisions made at City Hall are often the ones people experience most directly.
Fernie’s mayor and councillors make decisions affecting roads, recreation, parks and trails, water and sewer infrastructure, waste management, development, housing, taxation, emergency services and many other services residents use every day.
That makes participation by new voters particularly important.
Young and first-time voters bring perspectives that may differ from those of established voting groups. Decisions made during the next four-year Council term will also affect many of them for decades, from the cost and availability of housing to recreation opportunities, sewage disposal, infrastructure investment and how Fernie manages future growth.
Residents who have recently turned 18, become Canadian citizens or otherwise become eligible to vote are encouraged to learn how Fernie’s local election works and participate.
Voting in a municipal election is also one of the most direct ways residents can influence their community. Local elections can be decided by relatively small numbers of votes, making every ballot meaningful.
The City of Fernie is offering a New Voter Information Session to help first-time and new voters understand who can vote, identification requirements, advance and mail ballot voting, and options for people who may be away at university, college or on vacation.
Fernie voters will elect one mayor and six councillors, along with a School District No. 5 trustee, in the October 17 General Local Election.
Whether you have lived in Fernie your entire life or have only recently become eligible to vote, 2026 is an opportunity to have a say in who will make decisions for the community through 2030.
Your first local vote matters. Use it.
