The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association today announced the creation of the Canada Post Mogul Cup. This new award will recognize the best domestic female and male athletes through a series of nation-wide events.
“Actually this is a consolidation of our existing programming, like Canadian Series and National Championships. We’re basically combining all our national-level events. At the end of the day it’s exciting because we’ll have one domestic ranking for all our non-National Team athletes, with our Canada Post National Championships as the grand finale, where they’ll have a chance to literally compete side by side with their heroes,” said High Performance Program Director David Mirota.
The CFSA has introduced one new signature event as part of the Cup tour. This year the Canadian Selections will take place at the Canada’s newest Freestyle training and competition facility in Val St. Come, Que. on December 18 and 19. This new event is not merely a competition, but it is a chance for athletes and coaches from across the country to benefit from National-Team-led coaching seminars, talent identification and physical assessments.
The Canada Post Cup is designed primarily for athletes in the Can Free Train-to-Train and Train-to-Compete long term athlete development (LTAD) stages. National Team athletes are not eligible to compete for the Cup. Mirota said this gives younger athletes a chance to be part of a ranking system – to see how they measure up against their national peers — and at same time gives provincial team athletes the flexibility to compete in appropriate national events combined with NorAm tour events in a strategic, athlete-appropriate, training to competition ratio.
Competitors who take part in Canada Cup events will earn points for their placing in each eligible event. Points earned from their best four placings (of nine possible mogul and dual mogul competitions) this season will count towards the Cup. Provincial organizations may use these rankings in the selection of Provincial Team athletes and the CFSA will use the rankings for future junior talent identification camps planned for summer 2011.
