A mountain biker died following a serious crash on Trail Dogs in Fernie on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

The Edmonton man, who was in his 60s, reportedly landed on his head and suffered what appeared to be a serious neck injury. Fellow riders immediately performed CPR, but were unable to revive him.

Trail Dogs is a blue jump trail in Fernie’s Flow-zone trail network.

The Fernie Trails Alliance temporarily closed the trail following the fatal incident and asked riders to avoid the area until further notice.

“Our organization and the entire trail community are deeply saddened by this tragic accident,” the FTA stated. “We extend our heartfelt thoughts and condolences to the family, friends and all those affected during this incredibly difficult time.”

The FTA thanked Fernie Search and Rescue, Fernie paramedics and the Elk Valley RCMP for responding to the incident.

Mountain biking is an inherently risky sport. The death is a tragic loss for the rider’s family and friends, the people who tried to save him and Fernie’s mountain biking community.

Riders are asked to respect the Trail Dogs closure until the trail officially reopens.
