Fernie travellers will soon have more options when flying in and out of the region, thanks to major airline expansions of air service at the Canadian Rockies International Airport (YXC).
Starting in May, both WestJet and Air Canada will add new weekly flights to their schedules, increasing overall capacity by 48,000 seats annually. Each airline is introducing three additional Q400 flights per week, amounting to 24,000 new seats per carrier for the 2025 season.
The increased service reflects rising demand for both business and leisure travel to southeastern British Columbia, and solidifies YXC’s role as a vital transportation hub for the East Kootenay—despite Fernie’s own airport remaining closed.
“We’re thrilled to see this level of investment and commitment from both WestJet and Air Canada,” said Tristen Chernove, Airport Manager at YXC. “These added flights not only increase convenience and flexibility for our passengers, but they also support the region’s economic development, tourism, and accessibility.”
Fernie residents are encouraged to book early to take advantage of the enhanced flight schedules and improved connectivity.
