After last weekend Coach Will Verner named 18 year old Josh Garneau as the first ever winner of a new weekly award that was started just this season called “The Tim Hortons” Player of the Week Award. Garneau only had one assist but Verner says he played great and picked him as the winner. The top scorer so far is 19 year old James Werner who had 2 goals and an assist last week. Werner is from Chicago and is one of two Americans on the roster this season. Zach Fridella is the other and he’s from Las Angeles California. Also as usual goaltender Jason Greenwell is 3-0 after last weekend with a 1.33 GAA. The Riders seem strong in net and on “D” and Coach Verner is continually moving players around and bringing new guys and Fernie fans will get their first look at the boys next Friday September 25 vs Creston -photo Josh Garneau-

The Ghostriders are on the road again this weekend and play games in the Columbia Valley on Friday and in Spokane on Saturday. Now the Rockies on Friday is something were not sure of as they are adding players almost daily and have six new guys on their roster after a disastrous opening weekend where they lost three and were outscored 28-8 . Meanwhile in Spokane we may have the opposite happening as the Braves have a 2-0 record and a + 20-4 goals for. But they played Invermere 12-4 and Grandforks 8-0…17 yr. old Dylan Tappe feasted in those games scoring 4 along with 2 assists.

For the record the Ghostriders won 1-0 in the Forks 4-2 in Princeton and they won 3-2 in OT in Pentiction.-Photo Jason Greenwell-

In other news the Kimberley Dynamiters and Golden Rockets took turns winning on each others ice with the Rockets winning the first penalty filled game in Kimberley 5-3 and the Nitros winning in Golden 4-1, Matt Foster had three points in the win. Nitros Josh Prasad was pretty much by himself for the last year or so but now Prasad and Liam Jefferies are teaming up in the funhouse with instigators and fights in their first game. Fernie fans are gonna love these guys.

The Kamloops Storm are also 2-0 with a + 13-5 goals against (But lookout for Revelstoke) and in Nelson the always strong Leafs are 2-0 after a weekend that saw them defeat their rivals from Castlegar in another penalty and fight filled game 5-0. We even have a couple of guys in the league suspended for multiple fights after the weekendAint it great to have hockey back
