Cross country skiing is a great exercise option for managing our indulgences during the holidays! And new in Fernie is more trails than ever before with the opening of the Elk Valley Nordic Centre at Fernie Mountain Provincial Park. Thanks to lots of work by an enthusiastic board of directors, the Fernie Nordic Society has created a facility for their high-energy 80+ kids in the Jackrabbit and Track Attach programs.

Elk Valley Nordic

Norwegian trail designer Reidar Zapf-Gilje designed the facility and is known as one of the best Nordic trail designers in the country. Five kilometers of new trails are open now and set for classic and skate skiing with four different loop areas. This January a new bridge will span Lizard Creek and open up another 15 plus km’s of trails.

These new trails are for Nordic skiers only. People with dogs, snowshoes, snow-bikes or hiking are asked to use trails at Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake where those activities are permitted.

Currently in Fernie the trails at Fernie Alpine Resort and Island Lake are groomed and skiing well. Until the next powder dump the XC skiing is the best skiing in Fernie!
