The annual Fernie fundraiser for the Canadian Ski Patrol System was a great success. With La Nina in remission and a week of groomers at the ski hill, audiences got to see last years fine ski conditions through a collection of this years best ski and board movies!
The most popular film at the Filmfest was the Sherpas ALL.I.CAN. The Sherpas unique cinematography and environmental overtones made a highly entertaining and distinguished film. Fernie’s island Lake Lodge has a promenent sequence in the film. Coming in second was The Attack of La Nina by Matchstick Productions. MSP followed the same format as past years with La Nins’a snow conditions.
The best board film was the Art of Flight and it took 3rd place. This big budget film is spectacular with amazing vistas and top notch riding. A must see for all mountain riders!
In good fashion Fernie’s local ski and board shops were there supporting the CSPS and proving excellent prizing to the attendees. Of notable mention was Mark from the Gear Hub seen below awarding a sweet pair of powder skis to a happy skier. The Gear Hub presented The Attack of La Nina and almost everybody left with a prize.
Greg Burrows from Edge of The World presented the At of Flight and is seen here awarding a Burton board to a lucky winner. Greg has relocated his shop to 2nd Avenue in Downtown Fernie.
Mark Gallup, shutterbug and Guides Hut owner, presented the winning ALL.I.CAN. He is pictured here presenting a very happy winner an autographed print of skier Mark Amba who skied in the film. Mark also made two other attendees evening very special by offering their choice of Arcteryx jacket from the Guides Hut!
Without our supporting sponsors this fundraising event would not be possible: Teck, Fernie Real Estate, Fernie Lodging Company, Overwaitea Foods, The Free Press, Fernie Fix, Fernie Alpine Resort, Castle Mountain Resort and Island Lake Catskiing.
Last winter 33 CSPS members in Fernie and Elkford provided 369 days of volunteer patrol services. Thank you for supporting this event and helping with the volunteer effort!
Saturday in Fernie also saw the hosting of the annual Mogal Smoker party. This event is a celebration of the Griz, Fernie’s powder mascot, in hope that he will be pleased and bless the town with copious amount of powder. Lets hope that the Griz was pleased with Saturdays party and he gets on with giving us the goods!
