Fernie Nordic skiing has experienced a slow start this season due to last weeks atmospheric river however some trails have opened with more to come!

The Fernie Nordic Centre will officially open on Saturday, December 16th with a limited runs. The trails will be pack groomed for skate skiing, but not be track set as there is not enough snow at this time.

The terrain that’s opening will include the trails from the stadium to the Teck bridge, the Runt, the Grunt and the Connector to Galloway (but not the Galloway Loop).

The remaining trails will be closed or labeled marginal until we have more snow.

Other Nordic ski locations that are open in Fernie include the following:

Fernie Alpine Resort

The Silk and Manchuria trails were groomed and track-set on Thursday, December 14. Off-leash dogs are now allowed on the trails if they are under control.

Coal Creek / Montane

The Coal Creek Heritage Society Groom report: Start at River Road parking lot, ski River Road for 3km to Roots trail, down through upper Montane gate to Montane Hut. Then can ski back along Montane Nordic but stay on upper road and up through lower Montane gate (to avoid excavator work) back to River Road parking. A good 7 km circuit that avoids the excavator quarry and is beginner friendly and kid friendly. The River Road is multi-use and the Montane roads are Nordic only.

Island Lake Lodge

The Island Lake Lodge main road is groomed and skiing well. Island Lake opened this week with their first cat-skiing group so be prepared for snowmobile and snow-cat traffic. Please obey the parking signs and do not park in their lot.

Happy nordic skiing!
