Winter in Fernie is about more than just snow-covered mountains—it’s about creating opportunities, fostering empowerment, and breaking barriers. Fernie Adaptive Snowsports (F.I.R.E.), a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to bringing the joy of skiing and snowboarding to individuals of all abilities. This adaptive snow program offers people with disabilities the chance to experience the thrill and freedom of snow sports at Fernie Alpine Resort.

The program has a profound impact on participants, enabling them to develop skills, build confidence, and enjoy independence on the slopes. For many, it is a life-changing adventure.

As the organization prepares for its 2025 season, Fernie Adaptive Snowsports is seeking additional volunteer ski and snowboard instructors to help expand its mission. No prior experience in adaptive instruction is required, as training is provided.

A Vision of Empowerment
The story of Fernie Adaptive Snowsports began in 2011 when a young girl named Grace discovered the world of skiing. For the first time, she experienced freedom from physical limitations and societal labels. However, at the time, there was no adaptive snow program in Fernie, forcing Grace and others to travel significant distances for lessons.

Determined to change this, Grace worked tirelessly to establish an adaptive program in her hometown. Through community support, fundraising, and partnerships, F.I.R.E. was officially launched in 2012 as a nonprofit society. What started with a handful of students and instructors has grown into a cornerstone of the Fernie community, enabling individuals of all abilities to explore the slopes and embrace the winter season.

Why Volunteer?
Volunteering with Fernie Adaptive Snowsports offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible impact. Instructors play a vital role in helping participants gain independence and confidence. Volunteers also receive CADS Level 1 certification, equipping them with the skills needed to provide professional instruction.

The program welcomes individuals from all backgrounds—whether experienced skiers and snowboarders or those eager to learn and contribute. The focus is on creating an inclusive and supportive environment where everyone can thrive.
