Columbia Basin Trust will host four free Fernie Non-Profit Workshops for Basin non-profits, staff and volunteers. CBT is hosting the workshops through its Non-profit Advisors Program, with sessions focused on succession planning, payroll, volunteer recruitment and financial management.
Two sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by two afternoon sessions from 1 to 3 p.m., allowing participants to attend one morning and one afternoon workshop.

Succession Planning for Non-profit Organizations
Succession planning can be particularly important for smaller organizations that rely heavily on a few staff, board members or volunteers.
The workshop will look at practical ways to prepare for leadership and volunteer transitions and make succession planning part of ongoing operations.
Presenter Val Mayes has more than 40 years of community development experience, including leadership, board development, risk management and volunteer management.
Payroll Essentials for Non-Profit Organizations
This practical workshop will cover employer payroll responsibilities, mandatory deductions and remittances, Records of Employment and year-end T4 and T4A reporting.
The session is designed to help non-profits better understand the administrative requirements involved in employing staff.
Recruiting and Retaining Great Volunteers
Finding volunteers is one challenge. Keeping them involved is another.
This interactive workshop will look at practical approaches to recruiting and retaining volunteers and building stronger volunteer programs. Many of the same principles can also be applied to recruiting and retaining staff.
Presenter Kelvin Saldern has more than 25 years of experience working with non-profits, local governments and grassroots organizations across BC.
Financial Management – Building Budgets & Financial Statements
Designed for staff and board members, this workshop will cover bookkeeping and financial oversight, understanding financial statements and developing realistic operating, project and grant budgets.
The focus is on giving organizations better financial information for accountability, decision-making and long-term planning.

Certified Professional Facilitator Michelle Laurie will lead a 90-minute interactive session on designing and facilitating effective meetings.
The webinar is geared toward novice and intermediate facilitators and meeting hosts and will focus on improving facilitation, engagement and communication skills.

Fiduciary Duties and Responsibilities of Directors
Lawyer Jonathan Arkle will provide a practical overview of the legal duties and responsibilities of non-profit directors.
Topics include fiduciary obligations, duty of care, conflicts of interest, governance best practices and managing risk while supporting effective board decision-making.
